I have been playing around, tying various styles of hoppers. The thing is, there are so many variations out there, and so many different ways to tie them. Anyone have a favorite style hopper? I have been playing with more traditional deer hair hoppers similar to how I tie a muddler, but also with foam hoppers with rubber legs which remind me more of a glorified rubber spider than a traditional fly. Anyone willing to post their "go to" hoppers? I'll try to get some pics up of the ones I have done so far. Thanks

I really like the Madam X and buggier looking Chernobyl Ants with hackled bodies. These two are really easy to tie compared to the Dave's and just as effective IMO.

Here is mine:

You can have multiple color combinations to the body and legs. I did well a couple weeks a go with a yellow underbody and yellow legs.

Dave's hopper is also another standard in my box, also tie them in black and green. I would also have some copper john's tied up as well, they work great as a dropper.

when i was big into fly fishing, i liked madam x's and dave's hoppers...

i'm kinda getting the bug to get back into fly fishing... its been 2.5 years and i think i'm finally over something that took away my flyfishing spirit.

Oh man, that is terrible. I am sorry about that. I can see where that would take a long time to get over and disconnect the memory.

don't know the name of it but this has been my favorite for years, and pretty much all I use for hoppers. It is $money$

I agree... that is a sweet looking hopper!

Looks like a preformed body... not sure I've ever seen those in my travels. I'm certainly gonna keep an eye open for some.

The photo by MT406 appears to be a "raineys grand hopper". They aren't tough to tie, but I don't think the exact foam is available anymore. I paint a small flourescent dot on the top to keep them in sight. In rougher waters, they may sometimes flip over so I don't paint a dot and prefer to use one with a parachute post to see.

Another couple of easy hoppers...google "charlies fly box" and have look at the tutorials for the "charlie boy" (easy) and the "B C hopper" (a little more involved.

Hope that helps!
