View Full Version : puff balls
Any one ever try em?
They have to be fresh, nice and white through and through. Slice em, dip them in eggs, then in potato flakes and salt and pepper. Fry'em and dip them in ranch dressing or your favorite dip. Taste pretty darn good if I do say so!

Erik,
Definitely a good fall mushroom - if we get to them before the insects do.
Couple of years ago, we found a lot of the softball size ones, then one that was basketball size. That was more than we could eat or give away, so we cut the mushroom meat into 1/2 inch cubes then steamed them for about a minute (in several small batches.) When they were cooled, we packaged them in small plastic bags and froze them. That winter, they made great additions to soups, pizza, and even worked quite well for sautaed mushrooms to put over a venison steak.
This past week we found several softball-sized ones growing in our yard. We had them fried as you discribed, only we used cornmeal instead of potato flakes, and seasoning salt instead of Ranch dip. Very good eating. As with Morrels in the spring, we always leave a few for seed so that there will be more next year.
