I am from PA, and I make it up to the Hale area twice a year to visit a friend and do some fishing and hunting (deer mostly on public ground, and my luck hunting on public land hasnt been to good). I really enjoy visiting the area and found a few native trout streams (mostly Brook trout). My friend doesnt put to much effort into hunting or fishing, and i have been after him to find some better streams or rivers for trout fishing ! Could anyone who lives in this area please recommend a good stream or river for some decent trout fishing! I am also looking for land to hunt on ( public or private grounds, mostly for grouse and possibly some deer)! I know the hunting is asking alot, but I am sure some of you locals could share some of your secret fishing spots for a guy that travels 700 miles to do so ! I am also a taxidermist with 22 years of experience, (pictures of my work are available upon request) and would be willing to do some free mounting in trade for some hunting and fishing privaleges! Any help would be appreciated, and Thanks in Advance. Please email me direct at eckertkevin@hotmail.com

You are only 20 minutes away from the Rifle River which is a decent trout stream. But I were you head up the road to the Au Sable.

The Stillwater, the Boulder, the Gallatin, the Yellowstone....oops I forgot I am not in Montana anymore.:( Just got back and will never be the same. . BB's suggestion about the Rifle is hard to beat. The Rifle holds some monster Browns. Focus on the upper stretches and the tribs for smaller stream fishing.

You have some easily obtainable water with the Ausable and Rifle Rivers close by. It's really up to you as far as what you want. The farther you head up stream on either watershed the smaller and more manageable the rivers will be to fish. Check regulations on the Ausable system as much of it is flies only, no kill, etc.
Without naming other rivers, if you grab a Delorme MI atlas, almost any trib to either of the rivers will hold trout, especially the tribs of the Rifle. They are much colder and will have big fish that move out of the Rifle during the summer.
Really just about any creek/stream north of M-55 should have fishable trout populations. Check map for access and public land surroundings.
Have fun exploring.
