I never went steelhead fishing!! Just got some fresh salmond eggs last night, what is the best way to prepare them, Was told orange jello, sprinkle over eggs I guess this will make the eggs firm up to tie spawn saks/bags. What all can you fish with them? Good size eggs just don't want to trash. Thanks for your help. I have seen info in the past just can't locate.

Or do a search for "egg curing" under the pier or river forums. Youll have more recipes than you can handle :D

Do a "search" here on the site on egg curing, this topic has been covered many times over. I have done the store bought cures, the jello and a couple of home brew recepies but have found for loose eggs the mineral oil, store in the freezer method to be easy and have kept eggs way longer than the normal fisherman. ;)

For short term skein I still do the jello/borax mix, store in tupperware makes it user freindly for the kids. For long term skein storage I now marinate them in mineral oil then wrap in cellophane or vacume pack them, then freeze them.

Fresh froze is hands down the best method, put up in day size quantities, then add scent if desired / as needed. vacume pack is o.k. but I find Mason jars to work the best, put a birthday candle in in the eggs, lite and put on the top, instant oxygen free storage.

Skein is best tied fresh, then froze, for steelhead. Cure it for salmon. Glass jars or air tight containers work very well for freezing loose eggs. Just make sure your eggs, regardless of stage, are free of excess moisture.
