I thought this was interesting since we were just discussing it the other day
on the blewit lookalike.

The first ever North American case of kidney failure following ingestion of a Cortinarius was re-ported in early August. The victim collected and consumed the mushrooms under an oak tree in Ada, Michigan, on July 11. She is slowly improving, and her case will be published in detail elsewhere by physicians and mycologists directly involved it. DNA analysis of the mushrooms showed them to be a new species very closely related to Cortinarius orellanus.

More reports for 2007/2008 with summaries here from NAMA
which list symptoms and species if known and even lists some pets death.

Thats intresting that you brought up the Destroying Angel. Me and a other member here ( slugg ) were out the other day picking Chants and we found 1 white shroom that we thought was poisonous and we had a hard time getting a positive ID out of the Audubon. So he called a MSU Botney Professor to see if we could meet her for a positive ID. She said sure. We drove out there yesterday and she gave us the ID of Amanita Virosa (A.K.A. Destroying Angel ) She was very happy to see it, and asked if she could have it, so we gave it to her with no problems. She also received a Jack the other day which was nice to see. Just a little story I thought I would share.

That's pretty cool RL and you definitely went the extra mile
to ID that one.

The old saying goes "White on White ain't Right" applies here pretty well
and they are pretty common in Michigan, so it's a good one to know.

As far as people eating them, what I've read in the past it is
usually folks from other countrys that come here and it looks
like a good edible that they have there.

Here's a good read with pics for anyone on the most Beautiful
& Deadliest shrooms on the planet imo.

Recent death possibly attributed to a bolete (leccinum sp?)
Details are somewhat cloudy though but an interesting read
and a good reality check imo.
The folks were experienced shroomers.

Something else I noticed that in 2008...
Morels were the #1 cause of mushroom poisonings.

A few mentioned that they got sick after eating some raw!:bash:

The top 6 were
Table I. Principal Poisonous Mushrooms in 2008
Table II. Age Distribution of Human Poisonings in 2008
Mushroom # People % of total Poisonings

Morels..... 13cases 12%

Agaricus xanthodermus.... 5cases 4.7%
Amanita muscaria group ...5cases 4.7%
Amanita phalloides (Death Cap).... 4cases 3.8%
