With the cool wet July weather of late it has been ideal for trout fishing on the Au Sable River. Typically all is over heated by now in the Big Waters but not this year. After Sunday's heavy rain streamer fishing was excellent!

Not at all. That trout is swimming in the Au Sable River right now. Killing a trout that size would be such a huge waste in my opinion! That is a 5-6 year old fish and true a trophy that has a real chance to grow much bigger and be caught again. I do not see anything wrong with eating some fish if that species is very plentiful. But to turn a true trophy brown trout into a $10 trout dinner would have been the biggest waste I can think of.

That is a really nice fish and I completely agree with you. I don't keep trout but enjoy catching and releasing them.

Nice predator, Kelly. Trout don't get that big by eating just #22 bugs. But it helps to know where they are, and what gets them to go - and you certainly have worked hard for a long time to know the deal. Respect.

Yeah, I think you're right. Killing a fish that size just takes away from the breeding stock. I have a hard time letting trout go, however. I love trout stuffed with butter and onions. No finer eating fish, imo. I would eat those everyday, if I could.

My nephew's been doing real good on steelhead the last couple of weeks. He lives in Plainwell. I'm going to have to go with him here pretty soon. how come the steelhead are in the rivers and off the piers now? I thought they are usually around in April? Are they getting any steelhead in the big waters of the Au Sable? Steelhead on the grill is one of my favorites also.:corkysm55

If I join him one of these weekends I'll be sure to put up a report.
