Ok I have the bug now and every chance I get im heading out, well today was not what I had hoped for, but did find a few worth taking and managed a few (7) orange capped chants, and a few Cinnabars, This 1st one i think is a CHICKEN of the woods? On the way out of town i see this old half dead elm, and on it are these 2 GIANT shrooms, polypores im guessing check it out! pic 2 and 3

There are 2 more where that last came from, and they are still small (only 6") with inrolled cap's, If needed I can get them for ID purposes, if these are edible and im suspecting they may be i may want to let those other 2 grow? These have a huge woody stem that attches it to the tree, and the big one weighs in im guessing no less than 10lbs!

It's an old begrudgeoned chicken. L. cincinnatus. Too bad ya didn't get to it sooner cuz they're pretty tasty. That second one, does it have pores or teeth underneath? If pores, I'd say, although unlikely, Dryad saddle. This time of year is kinda late and I usually see old Blackfooted polypores by this time, but that ain't got no black foot either, so...???

Yeah, the first one would have been a beautiful white pored chicken. I love them as well. The other I don't know. Don't like to give bad advice. I thought Dryads at first, but time of year is off, and doesn't look right.

If any one has seen any of those MONSTER 's i picked off the dead/dying elm? Identification help would be nice ?
Man these are meaty, heavy, smells like watermelon rhind when cut?
Just from the taste test i have to say that chicken is stil edible and tasty, the picture doesnt do it justice, its fresh just up or at least thats my perception, looks like it just popped!

Sounds like a positive ID for Dryad Saddles. They are edible and good cooked right.( I don't like em much though.....descent in eggs though.) I found some last week and I thought it was odd and didn't say anything. Time of year is off. It's been a VERY wierd summer for sure. They can fruit in the summer under the right conditions too. I have to let you know though at that size they WILL be tough. If you really want to eat them go for the parts on the edge that isn't tough. If the chickens are still juicy too. Eat em up they are great!! Some people have an allergic reaction, but that's like saying you can't try peanut butter:lol:. The chickens look older, but I know how camera's are. I had cinnibars look like waxycaps once on here. Lighting really does mess things up. Been there.:)

That chicken is border line though.

I agree lighting and the camera angle make a huge difference, I cant find any other similar in the Audubon book aside from the Pheasants back, the 1 I found years ago was Bight colored tho, but it was on an unknown tree and this is most certainly an ugly English elm i believe?
I think i Will;l have to pass on eating this monster, ya I'm a chicken chit, but what a find none the less.
That chicken is not what Id call juicy, but if you pinch it between your fingers it will let off a few drops of moisture!
Raw the taste was OK not strong, tender to chew, man this is fun, and nerve racking all at the same time, so the chicken will be my 4th new shroom this year!
And after my dads friend brought us a Hen last year, I'm excited to find 1 of those too!

Found this and thought I found a polypore for sure, well check pic 2, kinda looks like a chant but NOT as I heard chants do NOT grow in clumps?
Sence im a rookie, Im not chancing anything!

.....Most definitely not a chant in any way whatsoever......However, I was there not long ago. It takes TONS of reading!! I respect you're desire. Just don't let it kill ya, or make ya puke you're brains out. Just telling you how shrooming is. I get called out too. It's that serious. However, if ya read for hours a day it slowly adds up in you're mind. If ya wanna learn keep posting and reading. Truly it sounds wierd, but trial and error is how you learn. Just make sure you know you're shrooms intimately before you eat them.

BTW....You're good on the chickens, and the other(Dryad saddle one..... with you're description I feel confident. Don't want to shy ya away. Most good shroomers have that learning desire. I sure did and DO!! Just letting you know wrong shrooms can mess ya up and a few WILL kill!! If ya wanna add me as a friend feel free bro.)

Pics can be deceiving, that's for sure. i eat chickens that are past prime for most folks anyway. Maybe the cooler summer is keeping the dryads poppin.??

I think that is a definite possibility. I was driving around town yesterday and saw 3 very large and, what looked to be, very fresh dryad's. I was only driving by so I couldn't be 100% sure of the ID but there aren't too many look-a-likes (any ) for a dryad

I have been finding some Boletes that i certainly can not ID, cause they are completely covered with white mold!
Just because of that I figure they must be the ones that are edible, oh well lol!
What if I watered the chants that I already know to be up?
I mean would it help them to grow faster or bigger?
I have 1 spot I found and theres literally a hundred tiny little chants standing there, and 2 days later they hard hardly grew at all?
Did manage 41 of the slightly bigger morsels(cinabar chants), but most still had curled margin's! Its just fun to be out at a time Im usually avoiding the woods, what was I thinking??

There's a certain parastic mold that is at a white stage at first that tends to infect Chestnut boletes. I've been finding alot of them taken over:(. Can't eat em either. Bummer. Could be one of the other shrooms it likes to take over as well. Also, on the chants different areas grow faster than others I've noticed. They will grow.;) Also, yeah the woods are fun bro. I'd live out there if I could.:)

Here's a good read on that mold.

I have some spots that all the boletes are usually attacked
and some spots never.
At this point I've seen it on quite a few varieties including kings.

LOL@ watering the chantys!
I think everybody has thought of that at one time or another.
Just need a long enough hose!
