I may be floating the flint river soon and some of my safety gear is up north in the 14' boat. I will be using paddles, and floating in an 8' flat bottom. I doubt anyone will stop me and check my equipment, but I like to be legal (and safe) regardless. Do I need to have life jackets on board on the river?

Just take/wear the life jacket (s)......No issues and "safe"... ;)

Law is here :

Asked and answered - good link - you must have at least a type IV throwable on board for each person. This includes the kind you sit on as a seat cousion -
