2002 was another great year out in Colorado. All 4 of the Andris gang got their Elk with my brother getting the biggest AGAIN and me being the last to get an elk AGAIN. Last year (2001) was a bust for me but nonetheless it was a week spent in beautiful country with lots of elk spotted. Had 2 bulls in my scope that year but just couldn't see enough points in the closing dusk. My father not being real big on venison donated his to me last year which was enjoyed by many.
2002 started with me losing my lunch on the first mornings climb. I took way too many cold and stomach drugs that morning which didn't work out too good. Saw bulls that day but all were a
mile away. Second day was uneventful until afternoon when we were busted by a cow who kept barking at us and caused a nice 5X5 to veer away from us at 540 yards. Day 3 was spent in that same hole never getting closer than 750 yards from the 5X5.
Day 4 started in a new spot that had elk moving around us from the moment we arrived. We immediately spotted a bull with six cows 175 yards away which might be legal. Safety off, crosshairs on the chest, and finger off the trigger. Guide says go ahead if you want him and I move my finger to the trigger. Start putting pressure on the trigger and he says "Wait!" "Not totally sure on the fourth point" As he looks it over again i take a second to regain myself shaking over the $2500 fine that was a half a second away and I spot a much nicer 5X5 bull 200 yards in front of us by himself. I show Roy where the bull went behind some bush and as he emerges from the other side I hear "nice bull". I take my first shot which rocks him but he's half running away. Gut shot:mad: Second shot hits him high in both lungs as he goes behind some oak brush. He's walking now and I can only see his horns and top line of his back. Put the crosshairs on the brush where his chest should be and take him through the lungs again about 4 inches from the second shot. Down and out:D
Get to him and he's a nice 2 1/2 5X4 with real long eye guards and a dark spruce rubbed rack. Big body for his age he probably went 650-700 live

Took the boned out meat to Trout Tracker's garage after I got home to cut him up and get some awesome jerky and sausage. 2 120 quart coolers filled to the top only took us 3 hours with all the right equipment.
