Fished the North Branch of the Ausable on Friday. My technique is usually to wade way upstream and then fish my way back to the car. On a nice two mile slog upstream I spooked what I believe to be a tiger musky out of a slow weedy stretch. I know my pike and this had the same body shape but veritcal stripes on its flanks. It was also very large, like 40" large. Has anyone else seen this fish upstream of sheep ranch? A fish like that cold do some major damage to the trout population. On a side note I caught about 50 brookies and a handful of small browns on tiny #22 bluewing olives. Fun day but no big boys or girls coming to hand.

It's obviously affecting the fishery!

He was part of the planting that happened many years ago by the Musky Unlimited group. The dam trout fisherman kept releasing their trout and not keeping them for the frying pan...so the DNR allowed the group to put in some back eddies to promote weed growth and release Musky into the system to curb the stunting happending on the trout. They plan to place a few more backwater(slow water) to promote the musky population. Heard plans to release more young musky in 2010 sometime as well.

OH-YEAH!!!

So, if one wants to streamer fish in there, steel leaders might be appropriate?

How funny would it be for some fisherman to be stripping streamers or a mouse only to have a 3 and 1/2 foot Musky latch onto it.:yikes: I've been surprized by Smallmouth Bass and Walleye in places where I thought the only predators were trout (like below Hodenpyle) but a Musky - wow, that would be fun.

great thinking, lets just kill everything in there other than the trout, doucher....

Out West, it is VERY COMMON to seek to kill ultra predators like Pike or Musky when they're illegally bucket stocked in trout waters.

Don't think tiger muskies are stocked illegally, since they are a selectively bred fish...

Hell I know of a few spots where every brook trout that gets caught is supposed to be killed as they are outcompeting other species.

Kaboobie!

So much for our state fish.

Quest is referring to the brookies out west. I was in Glacier trout fishing and they encouraged the killing of every brookie caught. They are beating out the rainbows, native cutthroat, and the protected native bull trout.
I literally landed over 200 brookies in about 3 hours in one lake out there.
