I know this gets asked occasionally and figured this would be a good place to start
an ongoing thread for future reference.
So please add your suggestions.
thanks.

National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms Gary H. Lincoff (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=Gary%20H.%20Lincoff) (Author)

This was my first field guide and I still like it because of the photos
and it lists the lookalikes to quite a few shrooms.
One guide is never enough though.

I like to carry this one in the woods with me though it isn't as informative as the Audubon book. It does fit in my pocket quite nicely though.:)

Smithsonian Handbooks: Mushrooms by Thomas Laessoe and Gary Lincoff

(I noticed that Lincoff isn't included as an author in the above link but the books are the same - at least the cover is:confused:)

A couple of books I have are...

Simon & Shuster's Guide to Mushrooms
by Gary H. Lincoff.
It lists some euopean species but I like it and has some good
keys and pics.

North American Boletes
by A.Bessette, W.Roody and A. Bessette
Quite helpfull if you get into collecting boletes.

Just trying to build up a few reference threads, so I'm adding
a few from another thread to save others from retyping the same thing
over and over.

Best starter mushroom book: 100 edible mushrooms by Michael Kuo

why that mushroom book....they are listed in order, in the beginning there are the "easiest" edibles.

("easiest"....nothing is easy in mushrooming but easier ones are least likely to be confused with anything dangerous.)

just staying with about the first 10-15 or so easiest mushrooms can be a lifetime of good times and good eats.

has all the basics of identification and a real good section on toxins and which mushrooms have em. It also focuses on identifying lookalikes and gives general tips on avoiding the majority of toxic shrooms. When searching out new shrooms the most important things are identifying poisonous shrooms and lookalikes.

Don't know about the tree book but I would recommend
The Mushroom Hunters Field Guide by Alexander H. Smith and Nancy Smith Weber
and Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora.

Good to have at least a couple references IMHO.
