Hi all! I've been looking for a 22, and have picked out two models. I'd like to know which one you like better, especially if you have had experience with either. The 2 I like are the Winchester Wildcat, and Savage Mark II G. Sorry 10/22 fans, those are both bolt.

I will primarily use it for squirrel sniper, and the occasional rabbit or coon. Hopefully crow, too. Second, I will just use it for plinking. I plan to scope it eventually.

I've been reading reviews, and both seem good and accurate, despite the wildcat being made in Russia. Both fit my budget. I'd really like to hear from those who have shot either, but any help is appreciated. So, anyway, wildcat, or savage MK2 G? Thanks in advance.

If you are going bolt... well the two you have are fine. Bought the step son a Savage a few years back with the accu-trigger.. you won't be disappointed with the trigger... I'd love a Ruger 77/22... Or a Remington Model 5 or a CZ 452... All a bit pricey though. Especially for a 22lr... Now maybe 17 HMR or 22 mag...

Whatever it is will be LR. I did look at Remington model 5, and it is a beautiful gun, but reviews seemed to say it was not as accurate as it could be. forgot to check price.

CZs are nice too, but out of my price range.

I love my Savage Mark II. The accu-trigger is real nice.
Only issue I have with it is the magazine is real loose. So after plinking for awhile, it gets annoying having to hold the Magazine when you are racking a shell.
I tried another magazine and it is still loose.
Other than that, it shoots like a dream.

I'd take the Savage, but I'd take this one. Don't let MSRP scare you...street prices can be had for a lot less.

I will be shooting one of these next weekend, a buddy of mine just picked one up. It feels real nice in your hands. Can't wait to test it out.

Everyone says savage so far.? The BTV is too fancy for me. MSRPs are always innacurate. No doubt it's nice though.

Loose magazines scare me. I know someone who has had a marlin for a while, and the mag. is loose. It has ejection and chambering problems. Which savage MKII do you have, WeimGuy?

I read somewhere(or maybe not) that the wildcat also has an adjustable trigger, but doubt it's as good as accutrigger.

Check out the Ruger 77/22 as well. Pretty pricey but a search might net you a deal. I have one in .22 mag and it is a great shooter. Not real fancy, yet very classy. Great magazine and very nice action. The newer models have better triggers than past models, but I would not consider them as good as the accutrigger out of the box.

You've told me to look at that one(77/22) before in one of my previous threads. I couldn't find any pics. Don'y bother posting them. I'll try to find some.

You live in Niles, too?

MARK II-FSS is the model I have....

I think the wildcat looks nice. Actually, I like the wood and color more than that of the savage MKII. The stainless bolt give it a nice look too. Dad is hopefully taking me to a pretty big gun shop/exchange 2night. I won't be buying yet, but I'll hopefully be able to compare these 2 guns.

MKII FSS... had to go check it on the web, but once I saw the pics it looked familiar.

2 for savage and 1 for wildcat. I'm still neutral.

Savage mark II all the way. my friend has one and it is so accurate. we put a playing card on its side from 50 yards...and we cut it in-half. go for the savage.

Nice! I read somewhere that Savage guns have to shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards before they leave the factory. Does anyone know if this is true?

I would go with the Savage. That being said, may I ask why you are not considering the 10/22? You know all the stories, mods available, accuracy and all that.

I want a bolt action. They tend to be more accurate too.
I got to look at a wildcat last night. I love it. They didn't have the savage i'm looking for, but I would like to see that model(MKIIG) before I buy anything.

For what it's worth, I don't like the looks of either of those guns. The Winchester looks like a WWII replica and I hate long magazines like the one on the Savage.

What about a Remington 547. I don't know much about them, but they look a lot like a 700 and have Shilen barrels!!!!!:D

I know...accuracy trumps everything.

I love the way the wildcat looks, and yah, some people say it looks like the Russia Mosin Nagant from WWII. I did give magazines a little thought. The long ones would be kinda irritating.

The most accurate bolt action .22 rifles I have are the Remington Model 581 with magazine and the Model 582 tubular feed. These are now discontinued, but do show up on the used gun racks from time to time. Prices vary a bit, but these are real shooters. All the best...

The only thing that bothers me is this- does the savage model have some kind of setup for scope mounts? Tapped, or dovetailed? I know the wildcat does.

Yes, I live in Niles. I don't have any pics of mine. Once I get a new scope put on, I'll put some pics in my gallery.

OK, first of all, I'm really sorry for resurrecting this post. Second, I thought I'd let you know which one I ended up with. I bought the Savage MKII-G back in July. I looked around for a while, and while I was on vacation in the U.P. we went to Mackinaw Outfitters.(in mackinaw city) They had the gun for $200 and I went back and bought it a few days later.

I love it! Accuracy is, I'm sure, great. I'm not the best shooter and I haven't got the sandbags out yet, but it's great. I can't wait to scope it.

(Just an extra) I was stalking a squirrel, and long story short, I picked it off at 25-30 yards with a perfect head shot. At first I thought I missed, but then the tail went straight up and it fell from the tree.

If you are looking for a gun like this and have any question on this specific model, go ahead and PM me. You might wait a few days for a reply, but I'll try to answer any questions about the gun if you are really considering buying it.
