Can anyone tell me how to rig flies when using a spinning rod? what pound test, rod size. where and how to tie the fly?? I did this once fishing the pigeon river in TN. but didnt pay much attention to the details( to busy pulling in fish) Thanks for any tips provided.

For Dry Flies, Streamers or Nymphs?

You can't fish flies with a spinning rod. It is written in the code of fly fishing ethics.

Just kidding. I have never done it before I always use my fly rod. You should probaly use maybe 5-6# test tie on the first nymph then tie on a trailer nymph. From there place several split shots above the first nymph by a foot, the each additionsl split shot 4" apart.

Good luck and maybe one day you could be part of the fly fishing brethern.

I assure you that one day I will join the elite, matter of fact I was practicing with a fly rod this weekend( I dont think that the cracking bullwhip sound is what i'm after:lol:) Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna try it this weekend. I snorkled a strech of the river on monday and was amazed at the amount and size of rainbows and browns. i saw. I also saw a walleye that would rivial the state record. Thanks again

Depending on whay you're chasing, you may be able to get away with an ultralight rod. I got a UL croix combo for christmas a few years back and ive been slammin trout since then. Its a 5'6" UL croix with a quantum reel and 4 lb mono/2 lb micro ice braid depending on the target game.

any other questions, feel free to pm me if I left anything out.

Ultra light with 2-4 lb mono; us a pliable/flexable type Berkley makes one that does very well. If you are tossing streamers a splitshot or two will do the trick. You can get surgical with your casts where a flyrodder in tight cover will have a problem. Get a clear plastic float or use the flyline floatant for weight if you are going to get into small nymphs.

A few years back I fished on the S Branch of the Au Sable with my little ultra lite with flies. I did not have any float bobbers but simply opened my bail, place the fly on a leaf, let it float and them gave line a small tug to get it into the water. To my suprise it worked a few times!

Well how did you do? Wouldn't mind a pm on the river you snorkeled, no specific areas, just the river.

You can also use a casting bubble. Fill with some water to give you weight to cast and can fish dry flies;)

Well boys i did pretty good. I went fishing with another guy and we landed over 30. took a few for the plate and gave the others a gentle return to the river. I didnt catch anything of any real size but did manage a few bows around 16" and no before you ask I dont have pics. ( i didnt want to drop the camera in the drink!! next time i will get one of those cheap waterproof ones) Thanks to all you who gave me some tips. I will be heading back next weekend in hopes of catching some of the monsters i saw(again) snorkling. Thanks again!

Nice job. If you can use live bait there, try using some grasshoppers(should be able to catch them along the shoreline) pinned to a gold aberdeen hook with a few splitshot a foot or so above it;).
