Does anyone know what chemical or how the bait companies turn night crawlers green?

I forget the name, but I have used it before, works pretty good. I think my dad picked some up at either gander mountian or bass pro a few years back

I have done fairly well with the green crawlers. I watched on Dirty Jobs where he worked at a maggot farm and they made pink maggots. It was in the bedding and the feed.

When I was a lil ficious, we used to grind up red bricks and put it in with their bedding. Results were mixed. Takes a while to take on color that way, food coloring would probably be alot quicker.

I was at M&M bait in New Baltimore last week and the guy said that he has sold them & I think he said something like feeding them spinach or some other green veg. He said that after you stop feeding them green veg material that they will eventually revert back to their natural color. Sounds possible, I don't think he was giving me any bull.

I'm sure this is the stuff the commercial guys use - as it's patented!
This stuff works great Aaron , I have some in the fridge now - although it takes a few days for them to eat it & change color.
Stuff looks like Instant Tang & dried minced garlic chips when you sprinkle it in the container - but like Greg said... they are soon "Imported From Chernobyl" !

I read that food coloring will kill the worms - and I did put some on a few (in the commercial bedding) & it didn't work for color.

I've used food coloring in our used coffee grounds. They eat the grounds and turn green/whatever color you put in.

When you buy a dozen next time you will see small green pebbles or what not in the dirt, they do eat dirt so what I do is save the dirt after the worms are done and them throw it in my big box that I keep all summer long. Just keep adding the dirt as you buy them and eventually the they will all become the green color you want. I cant say I have had a better bite using one over the other.

I was taught at a very young age that once something turns green not to eat it anymore. :yikes:    ;)
