I drew a Bull permit this fall for Michigan. What gun and what type load do you recommend?
I have a .300 mag, a 7mm rem mag, or a 30-06
Which one do you think and the type of load you would use. Guide says shots might be between 200-300yds unless you get lucky:yikes:

Any of the above with the right bullet will more than adequately do the job. I would pick whichever one you are most comfortable shooting.

I agree with AJ, and I would say you already are lucky.
I have been putting in for that elk tag since 1984. Guess I better go check for my annual rejection.
Sorry! You are unsuccessful in the 2009 Elk drawing.
Congratulations to those that got them!

Congrats. Any one of them would do a good job. On a hunt like this, get a good quality bullet. Whatever your choice is, I'd go with a 180 grain in either the '06 or 300 WM and probably a 160 or 175 with the 7mm RM. I've always been partial to Federal ammo before I loaded my own, always had good results and they load some good quality bullets:

Good luck.

I agree with the others. All will do just fine. I'd go with a 180 grain bonded bullet. Something that will penetrate deep. Elk are thicker skinned than a whitetail.

Each of these guns will work great, so see what your comfortable with. I myself love my Remington model 700. I bought it a few years back with a camo synthetic stock and flat black barrel. It's pretty light and shoots very well. After you decide on a gun I would try out some different ammo to see what your gun likes the best.

which one do you shoot the most? Whatever gun you are the most comfortable with is the one to use. I doubt your shots will be between 200 - 300 yards...I shot my bull at about 50 yards with a 30-06 and 180 grain bullets.
Most of the hunts I've been on the animals have been killed inside of 150 yards. In fact, I can't think of a single elk hunt where the animal that has been killed was farther away than that.
The biggest mistake most guys make is thinking they need some huge magnum gun that they are scared of and not making a good clean shot when it comes down to crunch time.
I used a 7mm Rem Mag with 154 grain Hornady SST's last year. The shot was around 100 yds but through very thick timber/brush. The elk only took a few steps before piling up. The bullet was recovered under the skin on the off side. I would also recommend shooting whatever you are most comfortable with and make sure you have a good scope.
Shot mine with a 300 win mag 180gr NP. One shot, one kill. While all 3 are adequate for the job, the 300 and 7mm are the calibers most associated with an "elk" round. Good shot placement and you won't have any problems whatsoever with either of these.
Oh and congratulations! I didn't know they came out already. It's the hunt of TWO lifetimes (as told to me by the DNR).

Shot my bull with a .300 weatherby, 180 gr. barnes X bullet in the lungs at about 80 yds, he staggered and fell.
I had the December hunt and anticipated a longer shot.
In reality all the elk I stalked were within 100yds
Conrats on the tag and good luck to you!

Have not gotten a tag (yet) but have several friends who have. One used my Remington BDL in 30.06, another used my 7mm. Hmmmm, my guns have shot more elk than I have! Two others used their own .270 and a 300 Wthrby Mag. All got there elk with the first shot. :D

I recommend the one your most confident with.
I used my 7mm with 165gr Federal Sierra Gameking BTSP in Montana and was very pleased with the results.

Another vote for this load. Massive damage inflicted, 40 yds and down he went.

I used a 270 before and last year a .308. A quality scope, shot placement, and being familiar with the gun are three important aspects. Most hunters I talked to shots were under 200 yards. The two I shot were about 125 yards. Good luck with your hunt

If you are comfortable with all these then they are all good. My favorite load is the 7mm mag 160 gr accubond.

Just pick one of them. They all would work. I used the 30/06 with 220 grain silver tip expansion points both times I got drawn. One bull (98)and a cow(92).

I wouldn"t worry about what gun to choose,I would be more worried about scouting and locating elk.Anything from 270-338 will get it done.
