it all depends on how much money you want to spend and how big of a genny you have.... i use halo's..alot of people use HPS lights..they are more and require more work on hooking them up but they cut threw dirty water beter then halo's...my advice is to get halo's since your just starting out( i take it)....they are just plug and play....hps you have more weight but beter light....and they run on lower amps then halos.........thats about it i know..

Sorry stickem but no.. HPS lights are no more work than Halo's to hook up. They actualy have the exact same wiring. I had 6 300watt halo's on my boat and i just switched two of them over to 150watt HPS. They have the same wires.. it was a matter of taking off the old and putting on the new, took less than 5 minutes. However, he is right when he says they cut the water better and they are more money. They halo's i was using cost about $9 and the HPS cost about $42. HOWEVER, the 300watt halos put out around 5-8000 lumens when the 150watt HPS put out 15,000 Lumens!!! huge difference, and the penetration into the water is amazing. So it cuts your WATTS in half NOT your amps. ALSO, i wouldnt reccomend running the 500watt halos, i would run the 300's. They arent as hot, they suck lest power from your Genny and they put out plenty of light! Any 500watt light can be swapped out with a 300bulb just FYI. Here are a few links to some of the best prices youll find around for both HPS and Halo's. PM me if you have any more questions.
Hope this helps :)

Ha.. you make me laugh. Sure, please do, id love for you to come and see what B.A.M is all about. Its an awesome group of guys, but you better bring your game face...
And as far as HPS being too expensive, its all on what you want to spend. I am bowfishing 3+ times a week so the better light is well worth it to me.
just tryin to fish
