Just wondering if anyone might know. the right of way between a guy fishing on the bank(me) and a guy fishing from a boat? I had my lines out on the boardwalk in algonac and this guy was drifting pretty close to the bank and ran over my lines. That wasnt a big deal, but then the ... wipe cut my lines to free his and didnt say a word about it. and just kept on going. In every other state I have fished the bank fisherman have the right of way and boats have to give way to there lines. Just wondering if it is the same or different here. I still know what the boat looks like Id still like to give him a piece of my mind.

That's pretty crappy of that guy. I always steer clear of bank lines. Can access anywhere on the water from a boat but your 100yds of shore must hold all the fish, lol.

I was fishing this point on lake St Clair last year this is what happened. I was fishing off the shore and was catching silver after silver bass. This guy in a boat saw me catching fish so he came over in his boat and anchored between me an the edge i was fishing.(about twenty feet from me). So I politely asked the guy to anchor on the other side of the deep edge and we could both fish the spot. He said to me ..Oh there is a whole lake here and just stayed there. I wasn`t catching anything now. A few minutes went by and I was boiling inside. I finally asked him ,"did you ever loose your patients?" He told me sarcastically, " Oh all the time" That was it. I told him if you don`t move I will proceed to throw rocks in his boat. He still shunned me off like I was some stupid pee on. So I threw a chunk of ashfault about three feet behind his boat. He still didn`t move just said thats assault. So i threw another over his head. The stuborn mule still sat there muttering insults. The next one landed in the front of his boat with a thud. He finally got the hint, He moved ,and I said why didnt you just move in the first place ? Was this too drastic or was i just being a goof? :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

In his defense...He might not have seen them. But once he realized it, there definetely should have been apologizes.
In a boat..we have the whole river. Thers no reason why he couldnt given you some room, had he seen them ahead of timne.

No one has "right of way". But common courtesy would dictate if someone was there first before you, he has the right to fish there in peace.
Simple common sense and common courtesy is all thats needed.

About 25 years ago we were fishing for steelhead in the mouth of the Au Sable from the bank when this moron launched and set trolling lines in the river and was trolling out to the lake. We warned he would run over our lines if he didn't change course. He only had to move to his port side a few feet to avoid us. He purposly came toward us to run over 10 of our lines while flipping us off and laughing. I went to the police to file charges for harrassment of fishermen as we had the guys boat info. The woman officer would not file the complaint because "You idiots on shore are always in the way of us boaters in the river." Wow was I pissed after that. After that when I went back and told the guys about my fun at the cop shop. Some of the guys then took the law into their own hands and lets just say the guys boat trailer would never be the same. There is a lot of water out there. There is never an excuse to run over lines on purpose like he did.

It would of been different if he just said sorry but I have to cut your line and I would of been cool with it. When I was living in alaska they have a law that says that bank fisherman have the right of way and boats must give way. I would of pulled my lines but i was engaged in converation and didnt notice the boat till he hit my lines. and I wasnt out there that far. If it would of been me on the boat ill cut my lines before I cut someone elses. It wasnt a bid deal but if you are gunna act like a dick about it well 2 can play at that game.

Agreed. I will sometimes fish the main channel at Metro and cast across the bank to the other side. But, when I see a boat approaching, I'll reel in my lure and let him pass. If boat traffic gets too heavy, I just move to another spot. A little common courtesy on the part of both shorefisherman and boaters is all it takes.

The other day I was fishing a breakwall by windmill point just north of the exit canal for Alter Rd Launch. I was a good 50-60 yards north of the bank fisherman and the "brothers" decided to cast their lead chunked presentations at me and my boat. I just responded with "are you serious". They said "I had a whole lake to fish". My response was "You have a lot of class". They responded with "Oh, we got class man, we got mo class than we know what to do wit." Keep in mind there was a strong smell of marijuana coming from shore as well. After two more near misses by them I proceeded to fire up the 225 and run over their lines on my way through the canal back to the launch as I was done fishing thanks to them. There are jack asses everywhere, it never ceases to amaze me!

:yeahthat:Again what he said
I have accidently run into the shore guys lines once in a while and then done everything in my power to avoid breaking their lines. One time I spooled the guys reel almost pulled the thing from his hands in the process. I fired up the big motor, throttled it up in reverse in the river to get back to him at his dock and then untangle the two lines. We talked for a few minutes, I appoligized for the mess, we swapped hot colors and I continued on down the river. Sometimes its just tough to see the lines and judge how far out they go.
In the words of Rodney King "Can't we just all get along"

I was up in pt huron a couple years back checking things out, and a guy was drifting pretty close to the wall. You should have seen the look on the guys face when the 2lb triangle weights were zeroing in on his coordinance. One even managed to break through his walk through wind shield and took out his electronics. I use to own a boat but I always respected guys on shore. There just needs to be respect for the guys on shore. Especially on lake st clair where that lake is pretty much land locked. Boaters have the whole lake to fish. bass fisherman casting on the shorelines for bedding bass can have 100 fish days theres no reason to rain on a shore fishermans day. I know everyone has the right to fish there but just put yourself in there shoes.

Hey Guys,
The guy on the bank will have the last laugh when your seal on your lower end leaks and you pay thru the nose after you find you need your lower end rbuilt due to the oil that leaked out from the line wrapped in your lower unit seal. Better off to stay off shore, it's only a fish dinner!

Sure, it's possible that the guy was being a jerk by drifiting over other's lines but assaulting someone with 2lb pieces of metal is an even more douchebag reaction. Imagine the look on the guy's face who gets lead away in handcuffs if a LEO had seen that happen. My $.02

Risking some pricey damage to your 225hp outboard by running over their lines doesn't seem like too practical of a response to me.

We had a battle At the Port Huron Smelt dipping meet. DoubtNDude got caught up with a boater he won though and was a good sport and simply unhooked the boaters equipment even after the guy called people some not so nice names. After that i would have kept his stuff.
