i am trying to figure a new spot to try for trout. is it better to fish below or above mio dam have fish below it twice with no success with a couple people seems right below the dam the water was a little warmer than earlier in the year. so is the water above mio damn producing a good number of fish or is it best to be below mio damn and if so how far down. i am not looking for specific holes just looking for a spot where I can park my car and jump in the water and walk the river any help on info above or below would be apreciated. pms are also appreciated thanks

Jeff, when you cross the river going north take the road that heads east to Mckinley. There's all kinds of trails along there that take you back to river where you can fish. One of these days I'll have to get up there with you, haven't got any trout in quite awhile.

You mean they make you get those now to park and fish:rant: I used to canoe alot, and they started making you get those permits to put in on the national forest ramps. Bunch of b.s. We would put in on private, or state land. Now just to park on the land they charge you? It used to be free to camp on national forest land, just like state, didn't even need a camp permit.

You can still park free at most of the minor access points (which you couldn't a few years ago ). If you go to the overlook, McKinley, 4001, maybe a few others, or camp in the Ausable loop you need a permit.
If the fees keep the facilities open and maintained, I don't have a problem with it.

Commins flats is a great place for someone just starting out or just a good starter for the first time out for the year, Lots of planted fish! The road from commins flats to Mio I have checkout a few of the roads leading back to the river but the all seem to fast and deep to get in and wade. Is their few spot in the same order as commins flats. I'm thinking of taken a canoe trip to get a better reading and use the GPS to mark areas that could be fishable this is my next option. Fish a few places closer to Grayling now just looking for something in this area.
