Actually even farther west and maybe the Keewenau.

My wife and I are taking a week in the Western UP this July, and are looking for amazing sights and real nice accomodations. Probably about 2 maybe 3 bases, to tour out of. Thinking about driving up on a Monday and staying through the following weekend. Hoping to get acquainted with the part of this beautiful state that neither of us has seen before.

Any ideas on real good B&B joints and places to see would be appreciated.

Well, here’s a personal opinion, unless you’re just going fishing or visiting casinos I would skip Escanaba. Head to the Keewenaw. There is a ton to see and do on the northern shoreline along Lake Superior, especially the Northwestern part of the UP.

I would maybe stay in Houghton/Hancock, but there are good lodges in Copper Harbor and many other small hotels. There is everything from hiking in the Porcupine Mountains, Going up to Copper Harbor in the Keewenaw Peninsula, Visiting Ghost Towns, Copper Mines, Brockway Mountain Drive, Cool Museums, Forts, Fishing, Lighthouses and scenery, etc. Lot of history there and if you have never been, you owe it to yourself to go there.

There is so much to do in the UP that it is difficult to point you in any one direction. I would say visit each individual county web site and decide what is important to you.
“I know what I like” (reminds me of a song) but everyone has different interests.

Hey Sarge,
May I suggest hitting the porqupine mountains. I was there a few years ago and it was great. Walking on the red rocks on the shores was great. Have fun

Sarge- I'm in agreement w/Engsetter skip Escanadba and head north to Houghton/Hancock area. There is so much to see and do up there, all the way to Copper Harbor. You might even want to look into taking a day trip to Isle Royal from up there. There was a motel or lodge in Eagle Harbor, I think, We didn't stay there, we had lunch there, but it looked decent. And there are several more in Copper Harbor. We were camping, if you can call it that (staying in state parks). This was a very rare occasion for me because my wife will not usually camp unless of course it's at a Hilton.

Don't forget to stop at my friend's place for lunch or dinner on the way north of Escanaba, Carl's Knotty Pine Bar in Arnold. Good hamburgers and great fish fry on Friday nights.

This is a great area, hope you enjoy yourself. My wife and I had a blast.
