:yikes: I can't believe it!! I got drawn for an elk permit for this fall. I got an ANY Elk Tag for area "D", the Dec 8th to 15th season! Doesn't get much better than that.:one_eye:
Now the down side. I live in the farthest reaches of the UP and have no idea about that area, not where to hunt, where to find a place to stay etc, etc.
I think this is going to be more difficult than all my elk hunting trips out west combined.
Oh, by the way; I'm a new guy here. I hunt , trap, fish in the U.P.. I live in a rural area that dosent get overrun with pilgrims and I really like it like that.
SO , where do I find a guide?????

This was my 6th year! I am still in shock as I have no luck when it comes to drawings. I have been applying for a Bull elk tag in a great area in Colorado and I have so many preference points it's unbelieveable.
How I got so lucky to draw this tag is beyond me but I'm not complaining! :D

I used (along with alot of other members of this site) Dennis Casselman when I got my permit. If you are in decent walking shape, he'll give you the best hunt of your life.

Congrats on your tag! A few things to remember about us that live in the elk range...
1) We are not trolls.
2) Book a motel room asap, remember we're not trolls.
3) Check your hunt area and call the guides in the assigned hunt area, we are not trolls.
4) Bring your snowshoes, we had some 'hate your mother' weather last Dec. By the way we're not trolls.

Dennis just called me and was telling me about some bulls that they found at the end of last year and he said the Sattelite bulls are huge let alone the heard bull which was an absolute brute! Dagriz, if you havent called him yet make sure you do cause he will book fast!
Congrats! Definitely call the Casselman's as soon as possible. I hunted area D with Preston last December and killed a big 6x7. There was at least one bigger (8x8) that we couldn't get in on. The snow was waist deep and still accumulating!:yikes:
I stayed at the Quality Inn in Gaylord. Good prices and location.
Oh, and start training now! They will walk your legs off. No sitting over a crop field or riding around in a truck looking to shoot a bull standing in the road with them. Find a track and chase it down.

Funny you say that cause his exact words were when he told me he found these bulls was that we did not have to worry about hunting pressure cause noone else would do what it takes to get to where they were!!

Congrats! Very Rare Indeed. My dad got one a few years back. A truly amazing hunt... (which I think has a lot to do with the state your hunting in) and when he got his congrats letter in the mail, they send you a list of guides and what areas they cover. Also do not be afraid to find out some local golf courses in the area, many of them find the elk a nuisance and welcome hunters on ( For a price with most of them as well) Good Luck, and get in shape! you will need it

I have a freind in Vanderbilt where I will be staying Got hooked up with a guide from Gaylord who came extremely highly recommended and very reasonable. His success has ben extraordinary fornthe past years. so far I am good to go, Sent him my deposit so I set with a guide. I've hunted elk out west for past 20 yrs so I'm no stranger to the work involved, Living in the U.P. has accustomed me to deep snow and traveling on snowshoes. I appreciate everyones congratulations and the advise posted. Every bit of advise helps!
I'll be danged if people who live under the bridge aren't called trolls ;) Up here we are called Yoopers. :D

Hey Terry, I'm still waiting for Idaho to draw, I put in for a trophy unit, if I don't draw, I can get an over the counter tag anyway. Also threw in for Antelope and a trophy mulie hunt.

The good news is I drew a Bull tag for the first hunt!!! The bad news is I am out of town until July 4th and would like to get a hold of Cassleman's before they are booked up. Do you have a number for him?? Do not want to be left out.
