help!!!!
I live in the Marquette Area and my dad is coming up next week. I am a student at Northern not form the area but we want to go ice fishing for pike, walleye, ect. We are used to fishing Houghton Lake and Lake St. Helen. I am an experienced fisherman but i don't know the area. If someone could tell me were we could get into some pike i would appriciate it. I heard that the Dead River Basin is pretty good but it is so big i dont know where to go on it. I am willing to let some Secrets about the AuSable and Manistee Rivers out since i worked at the Fly Factory in Grayling for Four year i have some info that could be helpfull if need. Thank in advance. joe

Welcome to the site Joe. Looks like you will be able to provide some valuable information with your previous experience.
I wish I knew more about your area and could help you. Is there a bait/tackle store nearby that could point you in the right direction?
I'm sure a few of our UP members will chime in soon and be able to give you some hints too.

My brother used to live in Munising and we fished a couple of times on the inland lakes up there. Try the Au Train Lake for perch and walleye. We fished either Shag lake or Fish lake, I can't remember. If my brother reads this he could probably help you out more. Good luck.

joe,
a friend of mine lived there for 6 years i will talk to him tonight to see if i can get you some help, but there is a lake west of town that i think you can still fish. i think its loon lake? west of town on 28. i don't know if that is the lake that you have to release the fish because of mercury or not. i know they have a lake in your area with huge walleyes but the mercury is so high you can't eat them. well not if you want to live anyway. will find out more tonight and post a reply in the morning.

Notmuchtime is right. We did fish AuTrain and he was the only one to catch walleye (and it was a litle one!) If you are in Marquette and want Pike / Walleye try the Greenwood resorvoir out by Ishpeming. When I was stationed at KI Sawyer AFB we used to have fishing tournys out there and we pulled some really nice pike out of there! For walleye, you couldn't beat Little Lake down by Gwinn (at least when I was there in the early 90's). Most of that lake is shallow except for at the far end of the lake (if you start from the public launch) where there is a deep hole that really holds 'em in there! If you don't plan on eating the fish and only want to catch and release, try Deer Lake out by Negaunee(I think it's Negaunee, or maybe Ishpeming). Keep in mind though that this is all based on my fishing experience from when I lived up there from 1992 to 1999. None of it is real current, but hopefully gets you into the right neighborhood!!

Hmmmmmm. Marquette. Spent a life time the once or so it seemed. Deadriver basin is good for pike. Walk north past the power plant to the first point, about fifty yards out should do. Used smelt on tip-ups back then. Au Train has a better variety of fish. Would check that out first.
