I fished Houghton Lake from the 8th thru the 15th of May and our group also did well on eyes, crappie, and gills. We had no complaints.

Went last year the last week in June for 3 days and got a fair amount of eyes, pike, crappies, and bass. Don't know where the perch and gills were though. Going back this year again for 3 days the week of June 17th.
The walleye fishing should be good in Houghton Lake this year. There was a good walleye spawn in 2006 so there's plenty of 3 year old fish in there to be caught this year. Last year me & my son caught a lot of undersized walleye in the 13" to 14.5" range so they should be 15" to 17" this year. :D
I'll be going up in a few weeks to find out just how good it is.

We will be up there for the first time ever in early July. Any tips on catching walleye, pike, bass, etc. would be appreciated. We will be renting a pontoon so keep that in mind. Location on the lake would be the biggest tip. PM me if you can. I have two kids and need to catch some fish to keep them occupied on the boat. I don't like to target bluegill. Anything else would be nice.

If you have kids that want to catch fish then you will need to target bluegill. :D The Middle Grounds is my most consistent area for ALL species. Try the deep weed edges for walleye. I like making shorter cast with a jig & leech or a jig & plastic swimbait on the weed edges for walleye. White spinnerbaits & rattle baits will get you some bass & pike. Walleye will move up on the shallow flats )5 - 8 fow) in the evening before sundown.

If you want to catch a lot but aren't worried about keeping target the pike. Troll some kind of Rapala, smithwick, etc in 8-10 ft.You will get the occasional Walleye as well. Some days they like bright colors better, some days dark colors, but you will always get bit. I go east-west between long point & west shore & south toward the DNR launch. Some stretches are pretty weedy but other areas aren't bad.
