This weekend I plan to go out on a coworkers 16' boat to teach him how to walleye fish. I am thinking holloway with crankbaits and boards trolling.

Would you recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening? I want to avoid the traffice but also increase his opportunities.

I have fished there and caught many eyes, just never early or late.

I'd lean towards morning...before all the powerboats come out to play. If you choose evening, you might have to wait a while til the lake settles down from all the activity.

I would try in the morning, Ive never had to good of luck in the evening. It seems that the boat traffic spooks them, and they dont calm down until late. good luck

I have been slowly learning how to fish holloway and the dam. I took out a 12 fter yesterday and didnt catch anything. I launched at zimmer and tried to troll from columbiaville to mt. morris... How and is it possible to troll with such a small boat?

I also prefer the morning on Holloway. It can be a pain once the high speed boaters come out to play. Although I have caught some walleye in the late evening once things have calmed down. But your best bet for some calm water fishing is to go in the morning.

thank you everyone for the feedback.

We will most likely troll with two planer boards per side and Hot-Tots.
In 14' of water, i will run them back 70'....if we get 15-18' i will run them back 100.

yup absolutely morning is best like everyone was saying before boats traffic starts up. although I have caught them throughout days in past on jigs.

when running four line I would start with each one at a different depht I would start at 20-30-40-50 feet back and see what happens. The last few years Ive had good luck with reef runner 400 rip shads out there. good luck

You'll be doing good if you can run baits 15 to 20 foot back without hanging on the bottom. There are some deep spots out there, but they are always close to shallow spots, and lots of stumps. But if you have lots of baits, and lots of money to replace them with, go ahead and run them 50 or 100 feet back.

Thunderstick jr. and Reef Runner jrs. or any shallow running baits or you will be losing alot of baits if you don't know where the river channel runs. Mornings are best due to boat traffic but I have caught fish with jet-skiers going right over my baits. In front of the beach or campground aren't bad places to try.

Stop giving away my tricks and spots! :D

And that even worked for me in the evening there.

I appreciate the tips. Yes i have learned my lesson with running hot-tots back 90-100. During the tournment, i lost about 13 in front of the campground in 14-15' of water. We'll be out there tomorrow. Should be interesting since it is not my boat and it is the first time it has been used to troll for walleyes!!
