Lake St. Clare...

Let's see now:
-Almost no accessible shore fishing. (you have to pay to even look at the lake. God help you if you even stop your car in gross point. At Selfridge they'll shoot you.)
-Dangerous to fish from any boat costing less than $10,000.
-Weekends wakes resemble those Behring Sea crab fishermen on TV.
-Detroit river is a hostile shore on the American side.

I live 10 minutes from this "world class fishery" and have to drive at least an hour or more to fish. No wonder people dump their drain oil down the nearest storm drain.

Well the problem is the most boats per capita in the nautical mile than anywhere in the State and likely the country.

A shallow lake that has a bunch of weekend warriors out there just tearing up the waterways.

I have lived a 1/2 mile from this lake most of my life...I NEVER go out on weekends. EVER.

I have fished from a 12 foot zodiac and had a blast...I actually prefer being on a bigger boat though, no matter what lake I am on. I am just more comfortable.

Lake St. Clair is a great lake weekdays and evenings. Try changing up the time you go out and watch the weather, todays wind was out of the ENE and earlier I bet was between 10-15 knots, it was not a great day to fish if you don't like bouncing around...you would catch the build up of swells on this side of the lake and the water, I imagine would have been dirty from the chop.

Spent the day in a 10 ft. jonboat and had a blast. There are many canals that don't get choppy and have fish available. Caught a mess of very nice gills and only saw one other boat on Memorial Day Sunday.

You'll have to get off the beaten path and do some homework, but the opportunities are there. If you are interested, shoot me a PM and I'll try to help out.

-Dangerous to fish from any boat costing less than $10,000.There are probably at least a couple hundred people here on this site that have boats under $10,000 that do just fine

-Weekends wakes resemble those Behring Sea crab fishermen on TV.If you're fishing the mouth of the Clinton River at Noon on a Sunday you're probably right. If you go out on a weeknight, or get out at sun up on a weekend and are off the lake by 11am you'll be just fine.

-Detroit river is a hostile shore on the American side.
No idea what you're talking about there. Never had a single problem.

I live 10 minutes from this "world class fishery" and have to drive at least an hour or more to fish. Then you're doing something seriously wrong.
No wonder people dump their drain oil down the nearest storm drain.Perfect ending to your rant.

Yea it sucks that you can catch 50 2-5 lbs smallmouth bass, 50 inch muskie, walleye all in the same day.

10,000 boat, not needed. American side of river is better than you give it credit for, its better than being in Fallujah. If you dont go out when all the yahoos are out the lack is pretty nice, unless your one of those yahoos. The weeds do suck but not much you can do about it. Anyways my freezers full how about yours?:fish::fish::fish:

I've fished that lake very safely and productively in a boat that cost me less than a grand. Sold that boat and upgraded to one that was much better and still only cost me about $2500.

I fished the weekends, but I was on the water by sun up and off by about 11:00. Still had a blast and a nice day of fishing without all the headaches.

I live 5 minutes from the greatest fishery in the world Lake St Clair. I have fished out of a 16' jon boat a canoe and a rubber innertube raft and caught a larger varity of fish then any other place I can think of. There are more launch sites with in 10 minutes of my home then most other lakes have launch sites. I have launched on the detroit river and never had a problem at any of the launches or any were on the detroit shore line. Go take a good look in the mirror you will be looking at your problem.

Was out this morning caught 1 in front of Metro beach in 9' and 1 in front of the 400 club. caught a nice pike, white bass and a rock bass.

You never know what is on your line, that's the beauty of LSC.

"Sounds like sombody had a bad case of the Mondays" Office space quote

I probably have less than a thousand dollars in my old 16 ft alumicraft, 25 evinrude and trailer. I you want it bad enough you can make do and still have fun and catch a fish once in a while.

LSC is the best all-around freshwater fishery in the world. A bad day fishing here is a great day in most other places.

My 22' Islander, which is a bit older, cost nowhere near $10,000 and can fish for any species, any method, provide shelter in inclement weather and has a nice cabin for over-nights out on the water.

I launch out of Alter Rd. in Detroit all of the time, alone or with my 9 y/o son and have never had a problem. The people shore fishing have always been cool with us, wether we were in or boat or walking some of the fishing areas.

With a little work and searching, you can find some great areas to fish that are away from the weekenders and crazieness. It's a huge waterway that everybody can do their thing, be it fishing, riding PWC's(even though I detest them) partying, etc.

I think tkluck is having a bad day but i agree a bit with him. With all the shoerline we have in the metro area we have very few spots to shorefish. I know there are good spots along the lake to shorefish but they are pretty spread out. Unfortunatly i cant afford a boat and i like to take my son fishing. Usally i have to take him to metro beach so i know he can catch some fish. A few years ago when i was a bit younger i used to fish in spots i wasnt supposed to be but they were such good fishing spots. Now trying to be the responsible dad i cant justify going to these places were im not supposed to be. Just wish there were more GOOD spots to fish along our great coast line.

Good God man! this is Michigan, good luck even trying to fish all the lakes in this State. We are spoiled compared to other States when it comes to water ;).

It's a shame our forefathers did not reserve space for a state park on Anchor Bay or on Harsens, but that's about as far as will go with this.

Well how many doors have you knocked on to ask permission to fish?

How much have you saved to go towards a nice USED boat?

How many friends do you have that would enjoy your company on their boat?

In case you just climbed out of a cave, any smart fisherman will be off the water by the time the other boaters are ready to go.

You can make it what ever you want or dont want. You seem to have lots of excusses but no solutions. Democrat I bet:evilsmile

What more can you say about this lake that is not great. I drive 5.5 hours from the eastern basin of Lake Erie (Good Smallmouth Fishing) to LSC for GREAT Smallmouth fishing. I did not have a problem getting on the water. Boat, not nearly $10k. 2 day trip last May with a co-worker and caught 110-120 SM. It was horrible:coco:. Could not make the May trip this year but I will back up in my 16ft flat bottom jon boat and plan on catching some beasts.

I always thought that the Deadliest Catch would be fun. That same trip a 2,000,000ft yacht came by and filled by boat half full. A little scary at first but the bilge did its job and we were fishing. Look at the bright side...YOU COULD BE AT WORK OR AT HOME WITH THE WIFE!

If any Bass Fisherman have some good info for a June trip let me know. I am taking my brother for some WORLD CLASS FISHING, St. Clair style.

TKluck, welcome to the site. Sorry to hear your problem with St. Clair. She can be a very nasty lady. (as you well know.) I will miss seeing you out there. Maybe we can hook up on Erie or Saginaw Bay some time? Best of luck with your endevers. :)
