Thank you Jake Peavy! Wasn't looking forward to the Tig's having to face him.
-----------------------------------------------------------
It's another swing and a miss for Chicago at Jake Peavy (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/288915).
The Padres (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/SD) ace declined a proposed trade to the Chicago White Sox (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/CHW) on Thursday afternoon, a source with knowledge of the talks told CBSSports.com, preferring to remain in the National League with the Padres than move into the unfamiliar, heavy-hitting American League.
Looking to get younger and add depth to a thin farm system, the Padres were set to receive four pitchers from the White Sox in exchange for Peavy: Left-handers Aaron Poreda (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1629160) and Clayton Richard (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1103052), and two others. One of them was believed to be Lance Broadway (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/585922), who surrendered five earned runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of Thursday's 20-1 White Sox loss to Minnesota.
The Padres have been intent on trading their ace pitcher since last winter, when the divorce of owner John Moores and the recession combined to cause Moores to order the payroll reduced to $40 million. The Padres currently remain at about $45 million; Peavy is due $11 million this season.
The club continues to think that the best combination for hitting their budget and upgrading the roster following last season's 99 losses and this year's inconsistent start is to deal their ace pitcher. Peavy was nearly dealt to the Chicago Cubs (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/CHC) last December, but that fell apart at the last minute when the Cubs, according to sources, grew impatient when the Padres continued asking for more players after the Cubs thought they had a deal in place.
The Padres also nearly traded Peavy to Atlanta in November. The Braves (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/ATL) thought they were closing in on a deal, but sources say the Padres changed names at the 11th hour and asked for minor-league catcher Tyler Flowers (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1539223). He eventually was dealt to the White Sox in the Javier Vazquez (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/8148) deal.
News of the impending White Sox-Padres leaked late Wednesday night when, after the Padres' victory over San Francisco 2-1, Peavy was summoned into manager Bud Black's office to discuss a potential deal to the South Side of Chicago.
Peavy's camp, sensitive to him being branded the bad guy in Chicago, was not happy that details of the potential deal became public.
"Not only is the public airing of this stuff counter-productive, it's probably destructive," Barry Axelrod, Peavy's agent, told CBSSports.com earlier Thursday.
Axelrod added that to say the fate of this trade was in Peavy's hands "is a simplistic view of it. Approval or disapproval, it's not necessarily in black or white. One thing we talked about six or seven months ago are the considerations that (might) need to be given should Jake agree to a deal."
In other words, depending on how geographically desirable a trade destination is, Peavy could request anything from a cost-of-living allowance to airline tickets for his wife and children to an entirely re-done contract, ala Johan Santana (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/174948) when the New York Mets (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/NYM) acquired him from Minnesota two winters ago.

Away from San Diego, Peavy becomes an average pitcher(in his career his ERA is a full run higher Away). No way in heck he's going anywhere. And especially not to the AL.

Not to the AL, no, but not anywhere? He's said he doesn't want to lose anymore and the Pads are desperate to move him and his money. But, with the no-trade clause, he's got them by their (insert favorite euphamism here).

His numbers while in SD will get him a $100+ mil contract somewhere. Go anywhere else BEFORE that time comes and he'll lose probably $25 mil when people see his numbers outside of Petco.

Just read that his contract's no trade clause changes for next year and beyond. In 2011, he can veto trades to 14 teams. In 2012, he can decline a trade to eight teams.

"Average"? :yikes:Average may be a bit overstated but not by much. Add the AL 1/2 a run a game to his ERA and you'd definitely approach average.
Career Away stats for Peavy:
100gms
46-37
3.82 ERA
1.30 WHIP
.245 avg

Career Home Stats:
108 gms
43-30
2.81 ERA
1.08 WHIP
.219 avg

He'll finish the season outside of San Diego - the owner, going through a nasty divorce, needs to dump salary. Towers, the GM, is going to be forced to make a bad trade.

He's one of the top 10 pitchers in the game no matter what league he is playing in.

In fairness, the tiger's offense has the ability to make minor league fodder look like CY Young winners.

Peavy was very good, his movement was excellent along with his location, but Bonine pitched the game of his life, throwing one bad pitch that hung right there for Beckham to hit out, 2 unearned runs because of Inge's error was with 2 outs. I like that knuckleball that Bonine is using, and the suggestion to use it more has made his stuff that much better...Just one game, as much as I hated to see the shutout...
