Hi all, I'm new to this forum but I've been posting on other smoking/bbq forums online for a bit now as well. I found this forum and figured it could help me with local questions from fellow Michigan smokers/grillers/q'ers.

Does anyone have a good local source for buy wood chunks of various types? I've been using wood chips in my MES 30" with good success so far, but I hate getting up every 1/2 hour or so to reload it.

Thanks!

What type of wood are you looking for?

I primarily use oak, cherry and maple. But, I cut all mine in my yard. Get a state land firewood permit and cut your own. That would be the way to go. It's free, you get exercise and you are outdoors!

This place in Ferndale sells various chunks of wood (grape, alder, pecan ...)

But if you're looking for logs probably just better off taking Firemedic's advice or keep an eye on Craigslist for people getting rid of wood.

What place is that in Ferndale? I didn't see a link.

Cutting my own wood out in the woods, while it sounds like fun, it not something I'm ready to step up and do just yet. :-)

Check local orchards for trimmings. They trim there apple trees and cut down dead trees yearly. They usually end up burning them in a big pile. Just stop by one and ask if they have any tree trimmings or dead trees.

The only time I have been refused wood from orchards is when the tree died from some type of disease.

You can by chunk wood there, apple, cherry etc.

Or you can by 1/4, 1/2 cords etc of say cherry wood and split it yourself.

And make kindling type pieces which is what i use in my home made smoker.
