Sportsmaster, You are right! Those look like the very poisoness 'False Morels' Don't eat them. Just send to me for proper gastrointestinal disposal. ;) Seriously though, you did better than I did last year. You are the one that should be giving tips. Did you get those in Michigan? I didn't think they grew in Ohio. ;)
every year we get them like that here in ohio
i have this fella down here tutoring me on how to find them and HE always does :))
and his methods seem to work :)
just hoping more people would share there ideas :)

When I was a kid growing up in Ohio, the annual morel expedition to Black Lake was really great and friends and family gathered, hunted and partied.
Sage advice learned over the years; "Peak season is 5 days before or after May 17th."
Also I always tagged along w/ Grandpa Garrison as he was the best finder. He hunted around ash trees only. We found the black or dark gray sponges there.(not spikes) He would walk and look off through the woods until he spotted an ash tree and then walk to it. It was almost magical when we got there and found the mushrooms clustered around it. If I remember right, ash are the last to bud out in the spring and he only hunted them when their new leaves were 'big as a mouse's ear.'
Anyone who gets a surplus this spring can sure as heck ship 'em on down. I'll happily pay the charges. Come to think of it, there probably isn't such a thing as a surplus of morels. Good luck guys and gals.
