I was wondering if any one has experience with drop away arrow rests. I mean do you just bolt them on or is there a lot of tuning to do. Some general info would be nice. Thanks.

I put a "Trophy Taker" on this year and I love it. It did take me a few hours to fine tune it but I've had good luck with it since.

In my opinion, the Muzzy Zero Effect is the best thing right now.I attaches to the cable guide and as the string releases drops away cleanly. Golden Key will be coming out with some very hyped up models after the AMO show in January. It might pay to wait and see what next years(2003) stuff is going to be like. with fall aways relatively new on the market, I think there will be some interesting designs as all the companies try to "one up" each other. Good Luck!

Paul20,

I am no expert, but I talked to a very knowledgeable and respected archer in the Grand Rapids area. He could have sold one to me but what he told me was that if you have a properly tuned bow there is no need for a drop away rest and it's just something else to go wrong in the field.
Not saying that he is 100% correct but you might want to do your homework before you purchase.

Pat, what you say makes sense. If your bow is tuned properly and you don't need it why have it. I did see it advertised on TV and it looks pretty neat how it works. I'm for anything that will improve accuracy but the best thing I have found is practice, practice, and more practice.

the best thing about drop away rests, after all these years of customers complaining that we set the spring tension to light on their rest people are realizing that its ok for the rest to just be able to hold the arrow at full draw. i shoot the trap door, it leaves me a good solid rest while my bow is static ( walking into the woods, in my tree stand or anytime it is not drawn back) unlike most of the other models. only down side is the magnet could wear out . most archers i know don't keep a rest that long, myself included. i one time shot the same rest for 9 years but that isn't normal. otherwise you can't go wrongg with a bodoodle rest. :)

I disagree up to a pont about a fall away rest being one more thing to go wrong. I use the Zero Effect Muzzy and it is no more complicated, in fact even less complicated, than some simple prong style rests.

And as far as no advantage if you're bow is tuned that's not entirely true either. I shoot carbon arrows and it has always been a challange to use a heavy offset or a twist on my fletching and still have it clear the rest. That is no longer an issue. Plus w/ this rest I can turn the bow upside down and when the moment of truth comes I do not have to look to see if my arrow is on the rest properly, as it always returns to center as soon as I draw.

There are a number of reasons these style rests make sense, but one thing is true you still need a properly tuned bow. This rest just eliminates one element of the tuning procedure. This is not a shortcut for the lazy.

As with anything new many traditionalists look at them with a skeptical eye, but w/ time they too will accept them like they did compound bows, single cam bows and carbon shafts!

Well there you go Nailer, I read your post and I gain a little more knowledge from someone with experence. :D I didn't know the Muzzy rest could do all that, thanks. Time to open my eyes. :)

The Nailer,

I would have to a agree with the heavy twist on the fletching. Like I said, I am no expert and am only going by what I've been told about my setup.

It's good to hear opinions from others, I might have to checkout one in more detail.

Thanks,
Pat

All that being said, I really think if you take a look at the Muzzy side by side with other rests, fall away OR prong style, you'll see why the Muzzy has gotten so much attention.

I agree with Boltaction about practicing, but practice does you no good if your rest is off or your not getting fletching clearance, or your centershot is askew or etc.etc...

I don't personally agree with the " if you don't need it, don't use it" (No offense, SUM;) ). If we thought like that...we don't NEED a compound with cams and machined risers and alluminum arrows, just a stick and string. We don't NEED to hunt, we choose to( although I'm sure I'll get a lot of argument for that statement!:p :D ). I'll never admit that statement again!LOL

If your looking into a fallaway definitley do you homework. Try to get to a reputable proshop and ask to shoot one. I have to say though, there are a lot of "PRO SHOPS"(termed used very loosley)that can't find their arses with both hands and spew nonsense about what the best is...it's always what they carry and rarely what they don't. Find someone you trust.

Not sure where you're at, but there is a shop around here(Jackson area) that is top notch. E mail me if you need any info or help and good luck in your search!

IMHO a drop away is the only way to go. I can't belive no one thought of this sooner. The Muzzy is the hot one out there right now but I shoot a Mathews Legacy with the roller guard so it's not possible. I have outstanding groups at 40+ yards with a tiger tuff drop away. But just like the others say nothing replaces practice.

Oh, by the way the very best archery shop in the Jackson area is Schupbach's on pearl st.

Hey Fred Bear,
They'll be coming out with a muzzy Zero effect for the legacy and Icon users at the AMO show. Shouldn't be long before they get it at Schup's. Haven't seen it yet, but it's supposed to hook on that funky cable roller you "mathews guys" use.:p :) :D
I'm about sold on the Razortech thay have....couple of more weeks;)

i also shoot the muzzy rest on my alpines! it is awesome! use carbons with a 3 blade muzzy head and a full helical for some great shooting at longer distances!

That's the Beauty of the fall away rests! You can shoot those big cut on contact 145Gr fixed blade broadheads that take a full helical 4" fletch to stabilize and STILL have full Fletch clearance from the rest!

Try that with a prong and watch it eat your fletching for lunch and you can't get some of those fixed blade heads to fly without the big Fletch.

Jamie, I'd like to go with the Spiral cam and1/2 as the wall is brick on those, but they don't offer them on the Razor. The regular cam.5 is still a sweet shooter though just a little sloppy on the tail.

That Muzzy ZE rest is awesome. In my opinion, it is one of the greatest innovations in modern archery since the compound. You no longer have to worry about the arrow falling off the rest, about spring tension, or about fletching interference. Try it, you won't be sorry.
