It seems that many that are new to Bear Hunting have a tough time finding good information on Bear Hunting here in Michigan. I looked for 2 years trying to get any information on Bear Guides... Since the State does not maintain any it is hard to find much on it. I even contacted MBA and they took a long time to get back and really did not provide much in the way of where to hunt, where the best and bigger bears are found, using a Guide or much of anything. I did some reading of Richard P Smith's book on Bear Hunting but again for someone looking to try it or get started there is not much information on Bear Hunting.
I have given up even though I had 8 points and now I am unemployed I continue to see this being a major issue fo someone to get started.
I did it once in Maine but they have different rules and just used a Guide which made it easy being there is so many and all are listed with the state...
As I read it sounds that you need to know alot and when some ask you get some information but there has to be a few more people that guide for bear and help with the baiting and finding a good place to do it. I had thought Baraga was the place but as everything changes now the state is trying to change what some have done for years on CFA. as well as State and Federal Public lands and what the rules are.
I know that you can't use any kind of container to put the bait into and leave out so bait has to be left out and many seem to put in out and the put logs or something so the bear has to work to get to it but other than that information is lacking as well as good list of guides that other hunters looking to contact and try and find some. Even a list as a stick here with the name and contact information might get more involved in bear hunting. I have given up on doing it for now and not sure I will keep buying a preference point. Over the years some vendors that sell licenses and points have no good info on it a friend was told that they could not just buy a point so he picked one of the hard places to get a license for Drummond Island and was lucky he did not get picked for one. But again the lack of good information on this. Might be helpful of those that have better information can post to a sticky thread that will stay at the top so those that are looking can find it easier. Just the basic would be nice. I have heard that some will do just the baiting because making the run to the UP on a weekend might not be enough to keep a bait active.
If you know of places that offer guide & baiting services might be good to get a list started nd someone just put a list together that might help with some looking for this kind of information seems some get off topic and trying to sift thru info just try find anything is a tough thing.
Maybe some can talk with the DNR and suggest they can keep a list of those that do this or have a program that might have a list of Guides because making the pay for a license might hurt them more than help them when running a small side business like some do...
Just an observation. For future people looking for this information...
