I have a 1988 Johnson 40 hp outboard J40TTLCCS. It is a great motor but....
It has 2 trim tilt cylinders that are weeping out the seals. Not bad enough yet but in time they will fail. I have searched the internet quite a bit and can't find anything like this. I would like to be able to replace them or have them rebuilt. Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing or would know where I could get these. Any help would be appreciated.

I had the exact same problem with mine a couple of years ago.I have the same year and motor as you.Went to a hydrolic shop to see if they can be resealed but one cylinder was too badly pitted. The other was fine.Checked all over the net but with no luck.Local boat shop here in town had used and new.$200 for used,$400 for a new one.I opted for the first. So good luck to you.

Thanks Redhawk
Were they able to recondition the one cylinder for you at the shop?

Was it Vans that had them new/used?

The motor is in top shape and a good motor to boot.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hydraulic repair shop in the metro Detroit area?

We can usually reseal the cylinder end caps if thats whats leaking.

I think you would be looking at about $145.00 to do both rams.

Let me know if we can help ...Jeff
