I have a 78 15hp johnson kicker on my boat, and am getting or making a remote steering system for it. I want to be able to control the throttle from the helm ( no need for shifting capability) and would like to know if anyone has any ideas for a simple, cost effective ( read cheap) way to do this? I really don't want to have a whole second shifter control up there, just the throttle. I'm thinking along the lines of a really long throttle cable with a lawnmower style lever. I would then just disconnect the tiller throttle but leave the handle in case I ever want to use it on something else. My boat is a 76,so looks aren't that important and I don't have a bunch of money to spend this year.

If you "rig" something up, try to make sure its safe. I have the Troll Master II on my boat and for fishing walleye, you can't beat it.
The throttle hookup that you're talking about might work. One problem that you might have is real fine control. Its just like the second set of controls on my boat for the kicker and others that I've seen. You end up spending more time trying to adjust for proper speed than you do fishing. Bump it, bump it again, bump it again, %&*@ wet to far:rant:, pull it back and start over.
If you can get the throw right, you might be able to make it work. Let us know how you do.....

Encore, thanks for the input. I'll definitely make the system safe, it will just probably be home made as opposed to a commercial system. I checked out the Troll master, and it looks really nice, but not in the budget this year. I'll be keeping an eye out on ebay and elsewhere to see if anything used pops up, but if not I'll make my own. I've thought about wiring in a remote kill switch so I could shut down the engine at the helm if I had to, but there's always someone at the back of the back of the boat watching lines, so don't know if it's really necessary.

The cable will work on the cheep for sure, leave the tiller control on the motor, use one of the little metal brackets that capture the cable like you would find on an old John/Rude ,mount it say under your regular motor controls , then get another cable ball, you know the part that fits into the little metal bracket, take an a-wrench pull off the front piece that would hook to the control box and thread the other ball end onto the cable put short length of tubing on next and then put the cable end back on. Now you can use the thumb wheel on the second ball for precise trolling speed.
If you are near Fair Haven I probably have some stuff you could use, might cost you a cold one!
If any of this dose not clear shoot me a PM with your number and I will explain it better over the phone.
