I am planning on doing some fly fishing for small-mouths in Lk St Clair. I want to get something that imitates a spot tail minnow.
I will be using a 9' - 7wt with 300 Teeny line on it.
I will be practicing (casting) for a Keys trip next year for bonefish and tarpon.
Does anybody have a recipe? Clouser Minnow?

Any clouser tied sparsely will do. Also consider woolly buggers in bright colors. You can also had a rabbit strip for the tail instead of marabou. Remember to strip right up to the boat. The smallies will follow it and won't hit sometimes until you raise the rod tip. Nothing like a 4lb smallie with only 5 foot of line out.
Look for the pigboat too. Shoeman and Esox tie quite a few of these. The last American Angler or Fly Fisherman had a pretty nice rabbit zonker pattern in it.
Good Luck.

I have good sucesses with big streemer flies that look like sun-fish for big small-mouths and large-mouths because I often fish near Metro-Beach Metro-Park where theres' alot of stunted sunfish.
I don't know how to tie but you can find some recipees if u google sun-fish fly patterns

I just made up some streamers/buggers with rabbit strips. I used olive with olive chenille with sparkles in it. Tied the strip in at the back and over the body to the front behind a bead head.
