Umichmike was starting to become quite annoying. Limiting people access when they are only here to stir the pot is very much the right thing to do. Thank you again, Neal
His banning has nothing at all to do with his views. It has everything to do with what we said was going to be an ongoing campaign. That is a mission to help all those people who do not understand that this is first and foremost a sportsman's site find the door, so they can go find a place that better suits their interests.

Yeah i do because i'm passionate and i tend to let the cart lead the horse at times until I step in it. After i clean my boots, I right my horse and get on the trail used most.
I have to say that after a few days and watching the clips for a second time, I find myself wondering why I let it get to me in the first place. ALMOST to the point where i'm embarrased to come back. Yet, here i am. Thank you for putting up with me.

I don’t think I have ever responded to Umichmike, but on occasion I have read some of his posts. I haven’t read the last 4 or 5 but it was clear to me from the thread titles that this guy wasn’t looking for reasonable discourse. He had a clear agenda and when I saw his latest thread title I said to myself this guy isn’t going to last much longer. Looks like the moderators made a wise decision based on clear evidence of his intentions.

The point is, this is the MICHIGAN-SPORTSMAN website. This is supposed to be a gathering place of a wide variety of, well, Michigan sportsmen. We have ample forums from everything covering longbows to crossbows, bear hunting to trapping, deer hunting to food plot disking, fly fishing to ice fishing, bass fishing to big lake trolling, reloading to flintlocks, mountain biking to mushroom picking, and then how to cook everything we catch, kill or find.
That's why members are here. It must be the main reason.
Now, with such a diverse group, you'll get diverse opinions. And that's fine. I participate in the political forum sometimes too. For full disclosure I'll openly and proudly admit that I'm a combo of a fiscal conservative, military hawk, but a social libertarian. Others have other combo's and are always free to express their political opinion here, as long as it's within the reasonable bounds of conduct.
I think I speak for most if not all moderators on this, what we're growing tired of is finding members who have very few and sometimes no posts in any other of the "outdoor" forums, but they live in the political forum with 100's of posts. Usually they are thread starters too and pot stirring topics at that. That's a huge red flag. Those people aren't here to discuss our love for the outdoors and then occassionally weigh in on a politcal hot topic.
And I don't care which side of the political spectrum they may come from. If a person meeting my exact philosophy has 400 posts and 399 of them are in the political forum, that person is getting the boot. They didn't join M-S to discuss the outdoors.
So please everyone keep that in mind. If we see that you have every 19 of 20 posts here in this forum, on hot pot stirring topics, and just rarely spend time posting elsewhere in all the other ample sportsmens forums, then that catches the eye of the mod staff. And it doesn't matter if you're right or left. The mod staff isn't monolithic in our political views either.
As I mentioned in the post involving the member in question, if someone isn't interested in posting in all the ample forums Steve has provided for us, there's lots of other political forums where you can flame away. There's Huffington Post, Daily Kos, MLIVE Newstalk, etc.
If all one is interested in is that type of posting, we suggest you spend more time there. This is a sportsman's site that happens to have 60 plus outdoor forums and sub-forums to enjoy. If you happen to only hang out and post basically inflamatory stuff in the political forum, right or left, you're not going to last long.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't post here, but just don't live here.
Consider it a suggestion and a notice rolled into one.

Oh heck... I guess I'm in deep doo-doo!
When I ice fished, lived near Lake Saint Clair, attended the first MS meet 'n greets, went out pond-hopping around the S/E Michigan with many friends here and traveled the entire state in business all week between following hatches and runs I had a lot more to add, but even then it was only to the stream reports and fly fishing/tying sections.
My sign in date says one thing but I lost my original sign in date during a mess-up that Steve couldn't fix or save... so I ended up needing to reregister under a different name.
Since I moved down south 7-8 years ago, I find my worth in giving fishing reports less and less valuable. I butt-in sometimes in the fly fishing section but even then am sort of out of the loop being so far away.
Does that mean I don't still monitor and look at what's happening, especially when I'm coming back up? Of course not! I just don't have much to add these days.
One thing that is the same is that I am still 100% American. Whether we agree or not on issues, this country and its future is a huge factor in my life and it seems to be more-so day by day. Maybe it's having some miles on me now and realizing the riches and opportunities our parents gave us through their hard work and sacrifices that makes me check this area of the site quite frequently and even add more comments here than anywhere else.
I may not need to know much about moral mushrooms anymore, how thick the ice is or how the smelt run is doing these day, but I dang sure still care a great deal about Michigan and the friends and family I left there and this country to whom I owe a great deal.
Again, there may come a time I will need to use the tools this site offers more to enjoy Michigan outdoors as I once could, but if just counting how many posts someone has elsewhere on this site is a new rule for staying as a member I guess I could come up with some good filler elsewhere on this site too.

But I would also add that it's sportsmen and Women talking to other sports persons. That has allot of back bone when two people can talk about subjects your both familiar with. Having some dude that's never fished or shot a hand gun or AR-15 sitting here trying to tell us that we are all evil for doing so is not a discussion I wan't to be a part of. You just have no IDEA unless you grew up with it or experienced hunting and fishing for yourself.
I grew up in a family of 8 boys and one girl. I'm third from the last and the only brother I had to show me hunting and fishing died before i got out of high school. I picked most of what i do all by myself learning all the rights and wrongs on the way by trial and error. Some will tell you that i'm the luckiest deer hunter in the woods because I have learned one simple rule of the woods. Sit still. If you can master that, you will have more deer around you and see more deer than ever.
My hunting and love for fishing pols, fly rods, and guns have grown leaps and bounds since i was a kid. I am proud to be a sportsman in the woods and showing the young ones who are interested enough to learn what i know. But pulling the kids away from the video games is a hard thing to do. This picture says it all for me!

As recently as 2 years ago, Umichmike lived in Atlanta, Ga. Not sure if he still lives there or not. I couldn't tell what color his hair is from the only pic I could find of him.

Then again I do contribute in the other forums a lot. Seasonally.
I just seem to find myself in the political forum more these days than ever. Maybe it's because I'm more concerned with our country than ever. I don't like being labeled "Right, Left, Conservative, Liberal" I really, honestly don't know where I stand in all of that. I just come here hoping other peoples views can help me figure out what is right and wrong with what's going on in politics and whether or not what I'm thinking is right or not.
I think sharing political views with other sportsmen who have the same values as I do is more rewarding than going on a political forum with a bunch of PETA members, Vegans, etc.. I really don't care about their views.

Just as there are areas here many don't click on because it doesn't interest them, why not just forget this area exists? Really.
When it comes to the number of posts for any one topic area, there isn't a close second place to this area. It must be of interest to a lot of us.
Gun rights don't fall under political topics? Land access rights? Taxes? Elections?
If there is any one thing we ALL have in common on this site it is the fact we are nearly all Americans and many issues affect our leasure lives as well as our day-to-day lives.
I for one think it's great to have a place like this to vent and I also think it's great that Steve has enough brass to let this area go on even though he might not agree with every letter posted!

Very good point.
I also agree that it is cool for the site to allow the forum to exist. There are MANY political issues that can/will impact our time in the outdoors and it is important that we be allowed to discuss them.
Part of the problem (IMO) of what is wrong with America today is that people can't, or are no longer willing, to discuss issues they don't agree with. How boring would the world be, especially in a free Country, if everyone only talked to, or discussed items with, those that share their viewpoints 100%?
Doesn't sound like the America I know and I'm sure the millions of Men and Women that have sacrificed so much to ensure our ability to have these discussions would be a little disappointed if everyone's right to free speech and discussion were infringed upon.
Alot is made on this board and around politics in general of 2nd amendment rights (especially by me because I feel they are important). But the reason I feel they are important is because they are also directly related to our freedom to speak out against things we don't agree with and a Government that tries to limit our other God given rights. Without the ability to voice our concerns, we are nothing more than a communist nation.

StumpJumper makes a good point. I pretty much agree with his same political-philosophical stance. I own firearms, and believe in personal responsibility, am a bit liberal scocially but not so much politically and am a tree hugger (shrooms!!!) and do not believe I OR YOU (not specifically you jlcrss) know all the answers, but thats really not the point.
You (not specifically you jlcrss) gotta be able to handle others opinions and beliefs even if you question them and disagree with them. It is a big world and we are all in it.
For about 10 minutes (figuratively) in my time on here I almost found it too easy to be bold and opinionated. I quit that long ago and feel like an idiot for a few of the things I posted way back when. Never been warned and hope not to be.
So, Let it be, let it be! Let it be-ee, let it be! There will be an answer......;)

One problem is that at least some of the people that come here are not sportsmen and Umichmike was one of them. Jackster and I have totally different views on politics, but I know he is a fisherman and sportsman and I am sure the moderators are very capable of making those distinctions.

To be up front, I don’t think much of Pescadero and his comment above is indicative of the ill will the political forum creates. Oh, Pescadero is clever alright. I didn’t call Umichmike a left wing loony, but that was why Pescadero responded to the loony right wing sorts on here. While not directed at me personally, it was directed at me personally.
I agree with Jlcrss on this issue and have for some time, but it probably won’t happen. This step is the very least we should do to get rid of the people who post controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response. It isn’t hard to figure them out, even when they make lame attempts to engage in sporting topics.

I don't know what your guys opinion of this is but if you get a post deleted don't you think you are owed an explanation why so that you don't do the same thing again?
I think you are beginning to get on my nerves. I am sorry the moderating staff has not been here to answer you in the couple hours on a sunny day that you deem to be a timely fashion. Therefore you deem it necessary to call us out. Well I am here, but I am not really in a mood to exchange civilities with you at the moment. Maybe later. Maybe not.

I can respect that, thanks OGM.

So that would probably be why I have NO idea who this umich... person is?
Yeah, he had a total political agenda here for sure.

While not directed at me personally, it was directed at me personally.
No, it was directed at everyone who comes in here to rant as opposed to attempt to have an honest discussion, even where extreme disagreements exist.
Calling people commies, anti-American, etc.
There are folks on the right here who engage in that behavior to the same extent UmichMike did on the opposite side of the issue.

I also think it's more of a King George, Nobama etc etc etc etc thing. To have discourse is fine but to lower yourself to name calling is childish and only weakens what ever arguement you might have.......

I agree, as soon as someone starts a conversation by using a off color name for a person. You basically could care less what the rest of his post has to say. It also shows what kind of moron you are realing dealing with. I have about 12 of them on my ignore list.

You will have to excuse me for jumping to conclusions, but since you made your statement after you quoted me, well I guess it just seemed logical.
I have no problem with someone calling someone a commie or anti-American if that is what they are espousing. The point I got from this thread was an attempt to get rid of some of those blindly partisan folks who use this site to provoke those who don’t agree with them.
It’s a little difficult to define, like pornography, but you know it when you see it.
A few weeks ago a person who was spewing right wing rhetoric was banned so I don’t think the moderators are favoring any particular philosophy but simply trying to get rid of some of the ideologues.

This is a very good point.
Like they say, "it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you." Civility and emotional control is the key.

At the end of the day the sight is private property. The owner can restrict your access any time he likes. I have no problem with it. There are many options for expression on the Internet. Ultimately the choice is with you. You make your choices on what sights to visit and what sponsors to click on. Bias exists on every sight you visit. Think. Work within the bias.
Civility goes a long way, too. I consider civility important because if you force yourself to be civil, then you are enforcing some control over your emotions. You are always a stronger opponent when you have control over your emotions.
