I picked up a spool of 30# fireline on clearance for 4 bucks thinking it would be perfect for trolling for pike. When trolling would you put a mono leader on the braid or just hook up your spoon/spinner to the braid?

if your going after pike a steel leader of 12". i use 30# fireline for my salmon fishing with swivels and coast locks and have to re tie due to fraying.

Sorry for the beginner question, but why would one use a different type of line for trolling as opposed to regular casting? And should a swivel be used to attach the 12 inch steel leader to the firewire?

BEWARE of the toothy's, if you think they have a knack for cutting mono lines wait til they smack a lure with braided line, it will cut so fast you will hardly know you got BIT!
Seriousely tho, a 15-18 lb steel leader 12-20" LONG would serve you better expecially if you use some FAVORITE hard to replace lure!
Braided lines are LOW strech, and if you have ever cut a showlace when its limp its hard to cut, but grab the end and tighten it up, and it cuts easily same for Braided lines tuff ya, but cut resistant not so much!
My 2 cents on that!

Wire leaders are common tackle when fishing for Pike. For those who are particularly skittish about wire leaders, Invisa-leaders are an option. Available at most tackle stores including many local Gander Mountains, they come in varying weights and lengths. A 5-8" 18# invisa-leader tied to your main line will typically make it through a Pike catch. They do tend to kink after the big chomp takes place and need replacement. For trolling big lures for Musky/Pike, I use a 30" 50-65# wire leader. For casting Rapalas in Pike waters, I use 5-8" Invisa-leaders.
