just got a nice little browning ultralight spinning combo to carry around with me for those,,,," oh look,,, a lake that looks fishy" moments. and for use on my lunch hour.
i want to carry it in the back of my pickup but don't want it to disapear or get all beat up rolling around. its a one piece 5 ft rod.
im thinking of building some sort of box that would fit inside the bed that would protect it and secure it.
any ideas?
i'm considering plastic sewer pipe but to fit the reel it would have to be 6 inch inside diameter. that would leave the rod flopping around in the tube.
maybe a smaller tube to slide the rod into and a short section of the larger tub for the reel?
have you seen anything out there that looked like a good way of doing this?
Get a bed side saddle box.

seriously considering that... but a $300 box for a $49 rod seems crazy even by my standards,,,,lolGet a bed side saddle box.

What about an "Easy Rider" rifle rack for the back window? It would certainly be more secure in there. Just a thought. Capnhook

Make one out of PVC pipe and put it behind the seat? ;)

5 ft rod is longer then the ranger cab is wide. otherwise a good idea.
for now it fits in the cab as long as i don't have a passenger.

Here's a thought, make it out of pvc with a long piece of small diameter tube for the rod part then get a size adaptor and make it bigger for the reel with one side that is threaded for a cap. Glue that all together and drill a hole thru the cap at an angle so you can put a lock on it. Then mounting the rig to your box is up to you.

What I did was take a 6" sewer, like you said, and on the other end I put a 6" piece of foam, the kind that those floating noodles are made out of. Shaped it like a disc sort of plugging the hole.
If you need a better description, I can draft one up in paint, so you get a good visual.
It worked awesome. I have a 12' rod and it's a bear, even after the break down to 6' parts. That's what I did. Then you can slide the rod in, cap the end for water, and then put your foam plug in, then cap that end. It's a beautiful thing.

those were the ideas i was thinking along too. then this morning i noticed how my bed is shaped, theres an indent on the inside of the bed where a tie down is locater up near the front of the bed side, it allows the reel to tuck in there nicely only sticking out an inch or so.
so now my theory is, several velcro straps along the upper portion of the bed side to hold the rod nice and snugly with the reel in the indent. then i will make a flap that will hinge to the upper portion of the bed rail out of aluminium facia, or sheet metal. this will cover the rod and reel and even allow it to lock down for security.
and the bonus is it won't eat more then an inch of bed space at the top of the bedside.
i'll do up some pictures of it if i decide to try this way.

There are to many theives out there to keep anything in the box of your truck. It will dissappear. The Ranger p/u that I used to have had plenty of room behind the seat to store rods, guns, lots of small stuff. Keep your rod there, and you will still have it the next time you want to fish.
