Are there any restrictions on which types of seeds may be used in a foodplot?

I am thinking in the lines of a nice one acre food plot this year with, pumpkin, zucchini, and acorn squash.

.480...These are all acceptable, but I have to ask what is the driving force behind wanting to plant these...is it tonnage for the fall? I've have experience with Pumpkins and found that they rarely make it due to the fact that the deer eat them before the even reach a softball size. Which in turn means they more on to another food source. You'd be better off with a Brassica or Chicory type mix here in the U.P. Where are you at?

I was going to put up an solar/battery powered electric fence until around Sept. 20th or so.

Plan on a visit from our local CO just to check things out. Once it is determined that it is a garden or food plot you won't be bothered. The problem is those flights take place just prior to firearm season opener so your visit may come at a very bad time.

I get very good tonnage from brassica; I think it's a much better choice plus there is no expense for fencing required. Brassicas include rape, turnip, canola, kale, cabbage, swedes, mustard and radishes. My favorite is a mix of dwarf essex rape, barnapoli rape, tyfon turnip, barkant turnip and purple top turnip. At times I will add kale, canola, bonar rape, pasja turnip or appin turnip; it all depends if I have friend buying seed. We will trade seed with one another for more diversity. Variety is the key.

Good luck.
