I'm a student in my second year here at u of m flint, and though I am getting to know the area pretty well, I still have not found a good place to fish nearby. I am looking for a lake with a decent amount of shoreline I could walk, but clean enough to not have to worry about taking a couple gills or sunnies home to fry up. I would be willing to drive out as far as the to the Ortonville, Holly, Lapeer, or Fenton areas. Also how soon do the gills come close enough for fishing from shore in this area?

I also have been thinking about fishing the Flint River from shore for the smallies that I have been hearing about. I have fished for trout in rivers before with crankbaits, and spinners before, but have never targeted smallies. How should I approach this in this area, and where is an access with a good amount of shoreline in the area?

thanks in advance

If you want to catch bass or pike, the small part off holloway reservoir (south of stanley road) has a lot of shores you can walk around. You'll have to wait til the water is raised though.

For panfish the gravel pits by the old timberwolf campgroup give you tons of shore to fish. Since the campground got closed you can't drive back there anymore, but you can park at the frisbe gold course and walk. There is at least 30 different gravel pitts you can fish there. Its off of irish road between mt. morris and coldwater (maybe 20 minutes from campus).

I wouldn't waste my time trying for smallmouth in the river.

actually the river is not a waste of time fishing for bass... there is a lot of bass in there, enough to almost make me not want to take the boat out on the local lakes.... I am planning on floating down the Flint river this summer in a flat bottom as much as possible.... i grew up fishing from shore on the Flint.... most of the fish are lunkers as no on really thinks fish from the flint river are good enough to eat.... the plants that once poluted the river are long gone these days... theres still a couple hot spots for polution from the old plants but not enough to really worry to much about, but call me crazy, ill fry up a fish from there.... just have to pay attention to what kinda fish you fry up and dont make it an every day meal even though i know people who do...

The Flint river holds Bass, Pike, Panfish, crappies, some perch in certian locations, along with year round walleye and the walleye runs from the bay... theres even some trout in there if you get lucky and are out there when they run in to spawn.... and then if you just want to have fun you can always go downtown and play with monster carp and suckers below the hamilton dam and in the channels behind the hotel downtown...

shoot me a pm and I will send ya a map i made of local fishing spots, I live by mclearin hospital / Mott Park and am always trying to go fishing.... let me know where you live and maybe we can meet up....

you should try fishing for bass along the river above the hamilton dam behind the UofM rec center between classes... or walk to the other side of saginaw st and try for some wallaye behind the hotel on saginaw st... and behind atwood stadium.... also fishing is good down 3rd ave / university st on the mott park golf course.... plenty of spots around there to check out... thats just a couple for downtoan area, theres plenty of other spots just shoot me a pm and ill send ya a map... or if you wanna tag along i have a boat to get out on some of the local lakes.... or go for some floats down the river.... one of my buddys is in the Frat down by the Flushing golf club on the flint river... so i can take out there... but there still good fishing further out past there.. so im thinking thatd be a good spot for short run when time is limited...

The OLD GM Plants may be gone but the Heavy Metals they left behind will be ther forever. Oh and don't forget the water treament plants that discharge overflow of raw sewage during periods of Heavy Rains:sick:

Fish the Flint a ton in the summer for smallies. Pretty much use spinners all the time, but will switch up to the fly rod and a leech pattern. Some of the deeper holes you can drift worms through and catch eyes too. VERY productive fishery.

also I have never had that much luck with impoundments. I was wondering about the river, but would mostly like info on the lakes and trout streams in the area just to clarify

My son & I hit the Timber Wolf gravel pits Last Saturday, not a bite. Along with about 4-5 others fishing there. They say is good when the water warms up, so we moved to the river for suckers. No good also!!
Nobody was catching anything @ the pits or river!!
The drive was open just to the east side of the gravel pits, with a parking area within feet of the water. But barracaded from going any farther. Locals threw a fit when drive was closed, county opened to the gravel pit only!!!

There is a main road that goes goes through that area and most of the gravel pits are close to that. If the gates open in the front you can drive to most of the gravel pits, but if not you can walk the road and should have no problem getting back. You can catch anything from bluegille, bass, pike, and carp there. I use to go there alot before I bought my boat.
