All,
I'm putting a VHF antenna on my fiberglass fish/ski boat. Since I'm only on big water a couple times a year, I hate to run the coax directly to the radio. Is there any way to put a joint in the wire near the bracket? Like a double-coax fitting or something?

Then I could take that monstrosity of an antenna off the boat except for when I need it.

Parts are available at Radio Shack. Could cause some weakening of the signal tho.

For best performance hook it up directly. Just remove the antenna from the mount when you don't need it. The mounts are not that big and obtrusive......you really don't want a splice or other connection for optimum performance........even though a lot of guys do it....

Good luck..

I could do that. I was thinking I would route the wire thru the hull, but your idea will work if I just go down the inside of the hull with it.

One of my boats had the antenna mount directly next to the console and the wire ran directly to the radio thru the bottom side of the console....a distance of about 4 ft or so. Just looped the coax and twist tied it up to the upper inside of the console, nice and neat and out of the way AND it could be unhooked from the radio and pulled out in less than a minute.........

Anytime you cut the coax and make it shorter the pl 259 connecter should be soldered and the swr should be checked with a swr meter
