Here ya go...From last August...Stategically hooked mind you. I managed to snag someones line that was snagged in this carp. I fight it up to the boat, see the fish and the line i have snagged breaks. Now, the fish has went from my side of the boat to my Dads side of the boat. All of a sudden his board burries...Hooked the line again on that rod.I grab the rod and fight the fish in.
...and here it is...
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d179/adam_bomb81/fish/7-28-08001.jpg
Heres another strategically hooked fish...been several winters ago now....Jigging for walleye when my rod doubles over...I knew right then it wasnt an eye. Fought it up to the hole and a big tail comes up flapping at me with my jig stuck in it. Thank god my buddy Dan was there to help me out as i had a cast on my right arm from my knuckles, encluding my thumb to my elbow.

Yeah, what happens in some cases with bow fishing is nothing short of disgusting. It happens every year it seems in Linwood. At some point youll see people out there bow fishing. Some groups take care of the fish, the next ones dont. Unfortunately you dont notice until the east wind hits and theres one nasty *** smell blowing in. A quick walk down to the beach usually reveals the culprit...An over abundance of dead carp floating around...Gee, i wonder where they came from?

I personally love smoked carp and will still eat carp out of a inland lake or pond. I put them in fresh water..(kids pool I unroll) and let them cleanse themselves for up to a week. When I do smoke...I have no problem finding takers.
I still park along the road in the spring and cast out a nightcrawler and wait for the bite. I usually ask someone if they want them or I release them. If it fights...I love it no matter what fish except DOGFISH...

Whats your guys thoughts on the best way to catch them????
Dave Ash
04-01-2009, 12:10 PM
Yeah, What is interesting however is if you think about what good bow fishing does.
It does thin out the numbers of carp/dogfish/gar which are all fish that have no apex predator when they reach a particular size (in most cases)
It is a management tool in my eyes. Groups like the BAM that shoot mass amounts of carp out of the K zoo and many other places collect them and they get used for compost (the last I knew)
I use this information to help me decide were I am going to fish. In my eyes its all a bit of give and take.
Its true no matter how many common carp a bow hunter kills there are always going to be carp here.
so we might as well get along.

Adam,my only 2 problems with bow fisherman is the fact that they either roll up on my bank space at night, (I have a lantern hung 4 feet up in the air right on shore so they know someone is there) when they are shooting carp. They could just as well go around but they don't. the second is if they shoot carp and let them float. They end up on shore mostly on the areas that are the best fishing (looking into the wind) I then have to dig a hole and clean up there mess just so i can fish.
None the less if your looking to get some kids out fishing (which you should) take them out carping. its cheap easy and fun for the family.

carp history for anyone who cares to read it
Prior to 1900 most native fish were viewed as vital food resources. Fish designated as sport fish today were harvested commercially and shipped by rail to the cities. The results were gravely declining stocks of river and lake fish at a time the U.S. population was greatly expanding. In 1871 Ulysses S. Grant and Congress ordered the formation of the U.S. Fish Commission to oversee the nation's fisheries interests. By 1877 the studies of European fish farming techniques indicated the carp would contribute to the strength of the nation.
By 1874 the commission after long study issued a report entitled "Fishes Especially worthy of Cultivation" It went on to say that no other species except the carp, promises so great a return in limited waters. Cited were advantages over such fish as black bass, trout, grayling and others " because it is a vegetable feeder, and although not disdaining animal matters can live on vegetation alone and can attain large weight kept in small ponds and tanks".
In 1876 the commission enumerated other good qualities such as high fecundity (a count of ripe eggs in the female fish), adaptability to artificial propagation, hardiness of growth, adaptability to environmental conditions unfavorable to equally palatable species, rapid growth, harmlessness in relation to fish of other species, ability to populate waters to it's greatest extent, and fine table qualities. By 1877 citing the above reasons and adding 'there is no reason why time should be lost with less proved fishes' the commission convinced of the value of carp imported 345 fishes of scaled, mirror and leather carp from German aqua culturists. On May 26 they were placed in the Druid Hill Park ponds in Baltimore Maryland. The ponds proved inadequate and some were transferred to the lakes on the monument lot in Washington, D.C. the following year.
So did they somehow escape from these confines to populate nearly everywhere? No. Now the state governments get involved. Records indicate in 1879, about 6,203 fingerlings were produced in the Lakes. These were shipped to 273 applicants in 24 states. About 6000fingerlings were produced in the Druid Hill ponds that year and were stocked primarily in Maryland. One year later, 31,332 carp were shipped to 1,374 applicants. In 1882 carp production increased to 143,696 fish, distributed in small lots to 7,000 applicants. In 1883 about 260,000 carp were sent to 9,872 applicants in 298 of 301 congressional districts and into 1,478 counties. During the years 1879-1896 the US Fish Commission distributed 2.4 million carp, some of which were sent to Canada, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Mexico. By 1897 the Commission discontinued the stocking because carp had been distributed nearly everywhere and many states assumed the task of propagation and stocking of carp.
I think Ive posted a lot of times that the group I run are not a bunch of bow fishing haters, But we don't like to see fish left on the bank to rot, and to be honest, stuff like that will give your sport a bad name for on lookers that come across the fish.
Ive always said if your going to kill anything, make sure your going to use it even if it is just for your garden.
All this bashing of each otheris doing theforum no good, there is room for both partys here and I know bow fishermen have there own group on the forum and I'm sure you wont see any carp fishermen in there bashing there topics.
Peace

I love carp, when I die I'm going to come back as one (But ill avoid bright lights from above) and I think you should all go and hug a carp after work.
Love em or hate them, you have got to hand it to the carp, they can live it polluted water, fight harder then most fresh water fish, grow many times bigger then most fish in our lakes.
I personally have a lot of respect for this fish and consider it to be a worthy sport fish (its like hooking the amtrak train), All this said I do see the need to control the population of carp, In my mind this will be good for my sport as the larger fish will just get bigger and I like big carp, how this control is done is a discussion for anther topic as I don't think bow fishing puts much of a dent it any river that feeds into the great lakes, and as for the pics of dead shot carp on here, some of them are old pics witch tells me that its rare that you guys shoot large carp on on a week to week bases (of course I maybe wrong on this).
Anyways, afew more pics of carp from me

Wow has this thread got allot of hits since i last checked in. I dont have a problem with bow fishers, just take the fish you shoot with ya when your done. Its not a pleasant smell when they are washed up on the shore with scorching heat beating down on em. After a few days of that its absolutely grosse. Thats not hating on a bow fisher, thats just stating facts and asking for some respect. You owe it to the fish, yourself and your fellow man to utilize that fish in some manner whether it be fertilizer in your garden, food, etc... Not to mention leaving them lay is illegal. Its called wanton waste.
It would be no different than me shooting 20 carp and throwing them by your front door to rot. It wouldnt make you too happy. Thats how i feel when im sitting on the dock trying to relax when an east wind blows in the stentch of rotting dead carp killed by bowfishers a few days prior. Its simply unexceptable.
Other than that, i dont have a problem with bow fishers...Stick em boys!;):evilsmile

RyGuy, it looks to me that T.J. is taking these carp, suckers, and gar pike with him. It does not appear that he's throwing them on the shoreline to rot. What he does with them, who knows. He might eat them, he might use them for his garden, who knows. If he's making use out of them, I don't see how it is a waste. Just my opinion.

What is really interesting is the fact that more BIG carp are taken on hook and line each year then bow fishing. I agree with carpman in the fact that I have no problem with bow fishing as long as they do not end up on shore.
Shoot all the little ones because looking at these pictures most of the fish you are shooting are under 20#. I am out for the 30+ anyway and if they have made it to 30+ chances are they are realized to stay the heck away from bright light jet boats:) JUST IMO
None the less have a great fishing season to both bow fishers and shore carp fisherman...
PS Bow guys.. Please pay attention to the shore guys when you are out doing your thing. Try not to run over or spread just to shoot in one small section of a lake:)

It gets real scary though when you drill a 20 pound carp and it's only attached to 6 foot of line! Makes you really think about shot placement when that hog comes flyin your way with a spear stuck through its side!

most of the guys that catch big carp hook and line are catch and release fishing. i personaly love harvesting all legal game, was raised strongly that if you kill it you don't waste it, you use it. and carp are very good eating. i do stop when i have enough.
they eat off the bottom of the lake....:yikes:umm go catch u some gills or something to eat lol.. all i know is they make good garden fert..now thats putting them to good use..what ever yall do with them keep it going eh

Stickem, I know this might be a shock to some, but 90% of fish eat things off the bottom of the lake!! some more then others but none the less;)
People eat catfish that eat 2 week old rotten chicken liver go figure!

No picture, but my better half spent 40 minutes wooping one on the
upper huron river on her wimpy bluegill rod that had hit a waxy
while fishing for gills.
Biggest one either of has ever caught.
Measured a little over 37 inches and was very fat.
Not sure of the weight but I'm sure it was over 20.
That sucker had some Huge Lips!
