View Full Version : Finally ran the Triton in the driveway.... pissed!!!

Well, I spent the entire afternoon working on the Triton. Vacuumed (looks great), cleaned up of the fiberglass (was pretty dirty), etc, etc....
Then I put a battery in it. Took it a bit but it started up and idled pretty good. Especially considering every plug wasn't even finger tight. Then I get absolutely NO WATER from the telltail, and no water from the exhaust. So we shut it down. Guess it's going to the shop for a new water pump. I just don't feel like tackling this job right now.
Then, after sitting a few minutes I notice a pretty good sludge puddle under the motor. Take the prop off... I think it's just nasty exhaust sludge due to there being no water coming out of the exhaust to speak of. BUT, I figure I'll drain the lower unit for peace of mind. MILK. Not sure what to do here. Fill it back up, run it, drain it again, and see what happened? Or, while it's in the shop getting a new water pump impeller have them pressure test it. This motor sat the entire 2008 season and was rarely used in 2007.
So... still not ready for the water.
And, the guy I bought it from can totally K M A. Told me the lower unit was just changed. Not. Told me the water pump worked fine. Not. We couldn't check it when I bought it because it was too cold... all his hoses were frozen and quite frankly I wasn't in ANY mood at 20 degrees to get wet. So I guess shame on me for that one. But seems he flat out lied to me. Guy ownes his own business... maybe I should see how he likes me stopping in and making a big stink?? I know, buyer beware... but to flat out lie just pisses me off.

Sorry to hear that. I just found out why my water pump isn't working, why the motor took forever to start, and why the gas gauge isn't working when it all worked great when I tested it in the fall. Simple answer, he made sure to siphon the tank before handing it over. The best part is, the guy who sold it to me owns a gas station! Not really that big of a deal since I did get a great deal on it, but I wish he would've just been honest and told me.

I would get a hold of the seller and tell him you are having troubles with the lower end he just had rebuilt, maybe the mechanic screwed up the rebuild, maybe he lied to you. If he lied you could discard any broken parts in the general direction of his business window.

almost two years of sitting the water pump will be bad. They are rubber and dry rot plus they will take a hard set in that time frame.
But for water in the gear lube is bad. did you have fishing line behind the prop?
Or is the shaft bent? easy way to test for a bent shaft is put the prop back on and spin it. it should be a nice smooth cirle motion if it is an egg shap rotation or anything out of a cirle the shaft is bent and will need to be replaced.

Sorry Mike, I missed the thread on your boat purchase. What is the make and model of the outboard?
Yes, you need to find out why you're getting water in lower unit and have that determined when you get the impeller replaced. With a boat sitting for a couple years...and how old was it before that...the impeller needed to be done anyway. My guess as to the sludge you found is from all the crap (fogging oil or some slurry) that was used to winterize the boat, and came out after you ran it. No prob, just messy clean up. Check the plugs.
You need to have a calm and professional conversation with the seller about the issues, and not at his business.
When he said the lower unit was just changed, is that the fluid was just changed or there was some actual repair done? Was the boat run afterwards at all? Who winterized the boat? How did they winterize it?
I'd think your next course of action would be to take it to the dealer where he bought it or had it serviced and have an estimate done. Perhaps the seller might be willing to chip in a little, and the dealer will work with you a little on price. After all, they need new customers. Good luck, you'll be out there causing mass bass commotion in no time.
Have you gotten your engine service manual on disk from ebay yet???
My boat goes into the shop for a lot more work than that as soon as the snow is off the driveway, so don't expect a lot of sympathy from me.

Checked the shaft. Nice and straight. No fishing line.
I kinda figured the impeller might be dry and have taken a set. But he told me it worked fine. Apparently another person had looked at the boat earlier in the week... wanna bet they ran it without water?
Well, I'll call my shop in the morning and get it in for a new impeller. I think I will just refill the lower unit and take it for a short spin to see if I get any water. I have a good supply of gear fluid so that won't be an issue.

Glad to see I'm not the only 1 who buys and then finds out he made an error!
The Guy I bought from says Oh yeah starts rite up and fly's no issues anywhere!
Then just before we leave with the boat hooked to the truck he says oh yeah we went with a lower pitch prop cause we were having trouble getting on plane!
Duuh!
Thats because 2 cylinders were low on compression, but I was excited and away I went:dizzy:
Well 1K later and a lot of effort, I finally remidied the problem and this year it will indeed FLY, and with the original prop to, not 2 pitches lower!
Hope you have better Luck than I did!

I would ask the seller if he had the receipts for the work that was done, and if he does, I'd take it back to whoever worked on it, and ask some questions. If not I would thank him for screwing you like he did, and move on. Sorry to hear what's happened, but s@#t happens.

Yeah, I'm going to go with the "sh#t happens" and move on. Like I said, I could do all this work myself but who has time for that???

Changed out a water pump impeller on the Blk Max in about 15 minutes, real easy to do, a few nuts and its removed, also upper seal is the bottom of the water pump, so changing that is also easy!
But Hay if you have to much going on then PAY someone else to do it, but dont whine when you could do it better and cheaper! Ya OMG!

Tell you what Carl... I'll buy the parts and pay you $50 to come and do it! That should cover your gas AND pay your first entry fee for COTM!!
I just don't have the time to do it. Last time I did one I had trouble getting the shift dog to line up. Just don't want to deal with it honestly.
Edit: OK, I have the parts in stock... and man do I love working here sometimes!! Can't beat the price I get to pay for it. :D So when you coming over Carl?????
Ya i been telling him to get in there and bid!!:D

Looking for a prop for my 150 Merc optimax. Whatcha got?
From what ive heard with aprox 18' boat and a 150 would be prolly be 21 pitch!
I have A Merc Blk Max Prop 15 spline 14 1/4" x 21 pitch aliminium, with hub kit, tho I dont know If I have a thrust washer for it?
I also Have a turbo Stainless in 22 pitch but im considering running that myself if after the boat is loaded it struggles at all getting on plane with the 23 pitch I have on it!
I have a steel prop i think thats OMC, 15 spline 14 1/4 x 21 a tad ugly, but could be painted, and a 14 1/4 x 19 stainless, tho its also ugly could use a polishing, dunno what the name brand is on that 1 without going and looking!
PM me if your interested in any of these!

That biscuit gravy like material is usually unburned gas and oil happens quite often on de winterizing start ups after to much fogging oil bad plugs from the year before and maybe no fuel satbilizer actually ran through the entire system.your water pump could be as simple as a spider or a be wedged in their it if you have it on muffs youre hose shold alsmot supply enough pressure to get some water out somewhere.ANy who replacing the impeller every two years is a good idea and can never hurt.Good luck , youll forget all about these issues after you get out and enjoy the water on her!

May not be plugged but chunks of that OLD impeller may be in the case, and will need to be removed!
I had to pull the pump base on mine to access the entry ports to get at the chunks, found all but 1 if the missing fin's from the impeller!
Should be a cake walk!
See you tonite!
