I went the 25th of March last year and managed to put 2 in the boat and lost one. So, while I agree its early, and it will be much better in another month, there are some fish now and if you really want to get out, give it a go.

Unlike years past I now make my own work hours so I plan on doing a lot more whipping this year than last year. I imagine I'll be starting up in the next couple weeks.
Can't wait!

Hey Bob how does that quote go? When the Lilacs Start Blooming, My Dogs Crap Starts Zooming?
And your another one with the lures, I don't think I could have you and BDB in the boat at the same time, would have to keep a towable vessel just for the lures :yikes:

Yap same as Bob, the first week of May ready or not  Back in my free youth it was soon after ice out. "Another saying went like this as soon as the oak leaves get as big as sqirel ears " But the lilac bloom may be a little more on cue.

i like the way the lilac bloom sounds, it has a good ring to it. You can catch them pretty eaarly and or all year just about it is all about the right spots at the right time and the action youre working youre baits you dont want to give them a headache when they are pretty lathargic:yikes::yikes::idea:

I have to admit it is tempting, but with 21 trays of lures and a Mr. Heater box almost full of unopened lures I have to pass. I picked up a couple more Hot Steel and some of the new Perch Rapalas a few weeks ago. If I had a mind too I could probably start up a floating lure shop, with all the lures I have and I make my own sinkers. I have enough 2,3,4,5,6 & 8oz sinkers to last a life time and still have more than a 5 gallon bucket of lead to melt. Thanks for the thought though, maybe some of the new guys/gals on the site that are just getting started whipping & handlining might be interested in some of them. Thanks again............Bob B.

Hey Slick, been thinking about the pencil plugs. Are there any Night-Stalker green head & tail, chrome body with green spots? If so I'll take two of them, the ones I had are swimming around somewhere in a couple fish. Broke my 12lb. Spiderwire to get them, I guess they wanted em pretty bad:lol::lol:. Hopefuly they got the hooks out or someone caught them......Bob B.

My lilac bushes are budded up in the back yard two blocks off the SCR. It's going to be awhile before they bloom as I am sure we will see some snow flakes tonight. Did get the boat out yesterday though..and man was it nice to be back on the crick.....:D

Did ya get a line wet when you were out there? Glad to hear about the buds coming out, won't be long now. I'm more then ready to start getting the net wet. Hope to be out the 1st. or 2nd. of May. Picked up my Mi. license yesterday, called MNR and ordered my Canadian license Wednesday.
Hey Brent, Slick said something about you & Sam ph having some pencil plugs. Do you know if there is a couple Night-Stalkers with green head & tail, chrome body with green spots in the bunch? Been looking for them for almost two years now..........Bob B.

No problem, if I find them, good, if not that's ok also. That was a pretty hot lure for me a few years ago, as well as the Chartreuse #11. Just wanted to replace them. As we all know, you never know when they're going to want that color pattern again.
This one is one of the best lures I've found. I've caught more fish on this one (same lure in both pictures) even with the broken hooks, then most of the other lures I have................Bob B.

is that one called the parrot? One night i got sixty two fish on a bronze body chartruse belly and black ladder back i got the last fish then i huge piece of paint finally came off.I ordered a dozen from gary and needless to say that pattern has not caught a fish for me in three years now !I guess that is why i have thousands of plugs at one time most of them had a good night!

I don't know what the name of it is. Could be called Parrot. I've always just called it Blueback, sure has been a good lure for me.
I'll be ready to do some fishing by the 1st of May. Built a new winch post for the trailer for $45. A new store bought one runs $150 to $200. Got a new electric wireless remote winch mounted on it. Be a lot easier loading the boat after setting out there fishing all night. For those foggy nights when I hear a boat getting close racing up or down the river I rebuilt a set of old Yachtmaster airhorns made in Italy for the boat. Once I get them mounted I'll be ready to go. The horns might be a little over kill but I want them to hear me as well.........
