I just cleared a 1/4 acre in the middle of woods,it's never been tilled before. It was so dense with trees' it had no weeds or any vegetation, just leaves. What would any of you recommend planting and when?I am getting a soil test soon.I was thinking some rye to start. It is high ground with some clay.I'm in s.mi. thanks

I have similar situation and was urged by a very knowledgable guy to use buckwheat this spring. This grows about anywhere, deer love it, and it will also supress weed growth, and I also believe it is good for building up the soi.. This fall, I will spray and plant a grain mix into the weedless plot.

That's exactly what I'd do!!

Would rye do the same thing as buckwheat,I already bought a bag of rye thinking along the same lines. When would you spray and replant?Since my last post I have started another plot, same situation, cutting tree's,doing all this in the middle of heavy timber. It gets addicting.thanks for the help
