Hey guys. Hopefully I can get some help here. My father-in-law loves fishing, as do I. I'm more of a bass fishing guy, mostly smaller inland lakes. I know that he's been dying to get out and do some perch fishing. He's told me repeatedly about how much he wants to get out when the perch fishing gets good.

The problem is, that neither one of us know the first thing about perch fishing. I'm looking for advice. I'm not asking for anyone to reveal their "secret spot," or anything like that, but just looking for some help.

We will be shore fishing, and will likely young niece along with us. We just want to get into the fish and have a day of fun. I feel bad for the guy because he has wanted to catch perch so bad, and we tried going one time in the fall last year and we had no clue what we were doing and didn't catch a fish.

Any advice you could give would be helpful. We would likely be trying to get out there this Saturday. Thanks in advance.

(Remember we are rookies, so please try to be very specific if possible, Thanks!)

Get yourself any old poles you can find, the zebco 202 or 404's work well, then a couple perch rigs (just ask at the bait shop) and some 1/2 to 1 oz. sinkers dependind whether in still water or river. A few bucks worth of minnows, don't forget to keep your minnow receipt with you. Head to a marina on either side of sag. bay, they are easy to fish from and will have plenty of people there to watch, ask advise, and learn from. The 2 big marinas are Sebewaing on east side of bay, and Linwood beach marina on west side of bay. Both are easy to find, just google them for maps.

Also see the post on here titled Perch, its about Saginaw River but they also talk about vets park. I would think that would be fine by the weekend for shore anglers.

Since youll probably be fishing restricted waters, youll want to make sure you have the right perch rigs so you dont get yourself into trouble with the C.O.'s. Reason is walleye season is closed inland and theyre trying to minimized their catch.

...So When you fish make sure you only use natrual bait on a single pointed hook.(not trebles) Gap can be no larger than 1/2" from hook shank to hook point. Also, no beads, blades etc...within 6" of any hook. No hook of any kind can be affixed to the line between the rod and the sinker unless its an unweighted hook with a minimum of a 3" dropper.

LOL Almost need a lawyer to decipher that jargon lol. But, I think as long as your using standard perch rigs with no beads you'll be ok. And if your gonna be at Vets on Saturday I might see you there. Hopefully, they will be in and stay in. At least its a nice place to have a walk. Adam, have you been fishing the river for perch yet?
