What is everybody's favorite presentation for gills this time of year when they first come shallow? I have used wax worms and super light jigs on a slip bobber in the past, looking for different ideas. Is it too early in the year to give a hunk of crawler a try? My freezer is empty and I need some eatin' fish ASAP!

After getting hooked on Berkley Gulp baits in Florida I think I'm going to give some of the wax worm immitations a shot. In the past, however, plain old wax worms with a light hook and a bobber were the ticket for me. Simple hares ears are fun and productive on the fly too!

I tried a tear drop under a bobber with a wax worm. I think I would have been better off with a plain hook. I am no expert on gils though.
Water was a bit cold still and couldnt figure out where the fish were.
Fished 43 degree water and the rest of the lake was 38-40.

Tried out some new flies at a local private lake and the little gills were going crazy couldn't even see how the flies where doing without having the little buggers all over it!

Could always through a fly on behind a bobber?

Most of the time, early like this, I use a casting bubble with a fly about 3' behind it. I'll usually use a slooowwww sinking nymph (like a hares ear). If the fly alone doesn't work, add a spike. Bluegill Magic right through spawning time. Capnhook

picked up a jar of the Berkley Gulp wax worms today. I'm going to give those a shot. Nice to have in the box anyway for later in the summer in case I run into a bunch of nice gills while bassin.

Small and slow presintations. I use a slip bober combo with a michigan ice fishing rig. Hair jig on the bottom and a fly up 6" or so. I make sure that the fly hangs off the main line a bit like on a spreder or drop shot presintation. Waxies till they bed then all hell breaks loose and you can use plastic to minnows. Try channels that have dark bottoms and iron sea walls they usually warm up fast and hold fish early.

I use a teardrop with a weighted pencil bobber so u can cast pretty far even with a headwind. I'll tip it with a leaf worm or a piece of small crawler. Waxies or spikes work good also..

I use an Invisible bobber with 2-4 feet of line depending on depth then a single hook with waxworm or red worm... water is still alittle cold yet, not til first to weeks of april on the west side.

they are mostly bright green... local bait stores have them, and try to find the clear ones or transparent ones. tie line from pole to one end and leader and hook on other. <> shaped... if that makes any sense. Also tie a fly on the other end if you don't want to bait the hook. hope this helps.

Mine is a little different. I use 4lb maxima ultragreen with the smallest Black Fury lure I can find or a rubber spider. When going to naturals I will use a slipbobber with #8 short shanked snelled hooks with a chunk of nightcrawler and sometimes a cricket.

Flyrod with just about any random fly. They will grab anything moving.

Poppers or very slow sinking flys tipped with a waxie. Black or bumble bee seem to work best. Sometimes a black dry fly with a cricket. I use a fly rod or a green bubble bobber. It's fun to hear those big gills smack the flys from the surface.

I use a slip bobber with a #10 tru-turn hook with about 1/2 of a gulp earthworm (brown) on it or a leafworm. But just been using the gulps as they seem to work just as good or better than the live stuff. Been out twice in the last week and me and my freind got limits of 8-9" gills both times.
