I fished higgins all day yesterday
after the fresh snow melted you could see garbage everywhere.
why do so many people have to be so frigin lazy?????????
there were empty beer cans, empty cig packs, empty hali packaging.
I had my share of garbage it all went in my sled and got put in a garbage bag this morning when I cleaned things up

I dont get it either, we started at smelt town friday afternoon before we headed up to big creek we cleaned up a small bags worth of trash that was on the ice around our shanty when we got there. Also when we started fishing there were 2 pop bottles on the bottom of the lake right under our holes. Why do people act this way, I was disgusted and if I lived on the lake I would be raising hell about it.
Please clean up after yourself!

The locals and the lake assoc. has tried... flyers, posters, permanent signs on road ends, handing out bags(left on the ice) Garbage cans (not used/stolen etc.) I dont know what would work. But as a liftime local I would love to shove the worthless peice of sh## slobs down the ice hole.
On the other hand, At the begining of season I change my avatar to an arial photo of Higgins And my location to it indian name...It means Sparkling Waters. I recieved several positive comments and storys of trash removed, Thanks to all!!

As much as I hat the thought of having DNR running around the ice all day and night pestering everyone that has done nothing wrong, it may get the point across that this has to stop! I love my freedom as much as the next guy but some people just dont get it.

What should be done is have a clean-up weekend on the lake, Anyone that fishes it on here pick one day out of the weekend and meet and clean up after the icefishing season. I would do it and i live 2 1/2 hours away and i dont think it would take long.. just an idea...

I second that... They say you can't fix stupid, well I guess you can't fix lazy either. Got my sons taught already to take care of their own trash and even that which was not thiers.

I hear you, It's sad when you have to make a point to pack trash bags of some sort just so you can enjoy some scenery without some other dumb@#$ trash all over.

Yeah and if they put a stop to the fishing there because of the trash the slobs would be the first to cry foul...

I get what you guys are saying. If the lo lifes keep doing this its just gonna hurt everyones chance at fishing on that lake for years to come. I think its certain down staters that come up here and there so use to garbage floating in there lakes and rivers. Please dont reck our lakes up here if your gonna do that stay down state.

I dont know if I would say it is just the people from down state, plenty of morons up north too. As someone else said just cant fix stupid. I have a place on a lake that has no boat launch just a small 4 or 5 car parking spot to shore fish or access for ice fishing. I have picked up trash every time I went out fishing all winter beer cans whiskey bottles propane tanks you name it. Neighbor had his shanty in the same spot all winter you would think its the only spot to fish on the whole lake holes drilled all the way around his shanty, and usually right in front of his door his kid got a wet foot more than once.
No body cares anymore or will take responsibility for there actions. I plan on going to the next association meeting with other property owners and trying to put a stop to the access if people cant behave.

This down stater has pulled car batteries and beer cans out of "your" northern woods, lawn chairs out of "your" northern lakes (lakes I can say with ease very few downstaters know about). How about considering the idea that whoever you are, wherever you are, set the example of leaving it in better condition than you found it.

I use to think that a lot of the trash was left after the people from downstate left to go home but not any more. I was out there afer the shanties were moved off the lake and I never seen so much junk left behind. In one place they even left a pile of smelt behind to rot. When the ice goes out it looks like a big sewer in the are where all the shaties were.

With that many different people every weekend, every day for months on end...there is bound to be garbage, whether left without knowing, dropped, slobs, wind-blown, or whatever. There are people that pick up some and others that look at it and walk over it etc... just try and pickup as much as one can even if its juts a wrapper.
I know some guys that dive every year when the ice clears and pick up a ton of stuff off bottom...poles, heaters, glasses, tackle boxes...you name it they have found it!!

I agree it comes from people from all areas, But as far as the permanents at smelt town. There were only 2 or 3 local shantys and a couple from houghton lake there all winter. most of the permanents there were from small towns in Missaukee and Wexford countys

It sounds like theres one decent down stater. And believe me I use to live down state I know how things are down there. Bottom line is dont be a tool people and leave your garbage on the ice. Or anywhere else for that matter

If you were to follow the littering animals back home you would see the problem. Trash breeds more trash which then creates and dumps the trash because it is what the animals live in.
