2009 changes effective April 1, 2009: The way I read it though the old regs are in effect til the 1st.

The daily limit of five trout and salmon in combination may now include up to five Chinook or coho salmon. In the past, the limit included a maximum of three fish of one species.
Anglers may now use up to three rods. In the past the limit was two, except anglers trolling for salmon in the Great Lakes could use three rods.

Out this afternoon from Marine City. Tried jigging nothing for us. Talk to another nothing for him but said he lost a salmon.Way to windy and cold!! Winds 20mph from the north and water temp 35 degrees. Needed waders to launch.

Looks like fun! :fish:

I've heard of great catches near the Edison plant this time of year, but never have fished the SC River. Also hear the current is pretty strong. Do you think a 5hp motor can take a 14 ft aluminum boat upstream, or would it just be nuts to have a go?

The river has a 8mph current, not mention the wind. Can your rig go 8mph? If it can, whatever it goes over 8mph is how fast it will go upstream in a best case scenerio. My guess is you could jump in and swim faster....

If it's an 8mph current I'd need a strong wind and a large sail.

I grew up with a 14' with a 6hp motor. Even full of decoys in the fall duck hunting, it would go no problem up stream. Not the fastest, but it will work fine for you. The current is more like 2-4mph, depending on wind.
I once used an old 3hp motor on a test run in the river and it still went up stream without much trouble.

From the Coast Pilot book...

(5) Currents,St. Clair River.-The following currents are based on averages of water flow through through the entire cross section of the river, that is from bank to bank and from surface to bottom during normal flow conditions. Normal flow conditions are encountered when there is no wind, Lake Huron is at a stage of 578.9 feet (176.4 meters) and Lake St. Clair is at a stage of 573.9 feet (174.9 meters) above the mean water level at Rimouski, Quebec, on the International Great Lakes Datum 1985 (IGLD 1985), that is 1.4 feet (0.4 meter) and 1.6 feet (0.5 meter) above their respective Low Water Datums. The current encountered at midstream is usually about 1.5 times the average velocity. Greater Velocities may be expected when the difference between lake levels is greater, or the lake stages higher.

(6) Currents for the following locations in the St. Clair River are given at high water flow of 230,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), medium water flow of 188,000 cfs, and low water flow of 130,000 cfs, respectively.
(7) Algonac: 2.0 mph, 1.6 mph, and 1.3 mph.
(8) Port Lambton: 2.0 mph, 1.7 mph, and 1.3 mph.
(9) Marine City: 2.0 mph, 1.6 mph, and 1.3 mph.
(10) St. Clair: 2.1 mph, 1.8 mph, and 1.4 mph.
(11) Marysville: 1.9 mph, 1.6 mph, and 1.3 mph.
(12) Point Edward: 3.9 mph, 3.3mph, and 2.5 mph.

Thanks, FH & GF! :fish:

Those figures make more sense. Be running closer to shore than midstream anyway, so it would not be as fast.

My rig can go about 5mph, a bit more with a boost from the electrics, if necessary (which it hasn't been). Might be more without my pike/musky gear on board. I've not had any problem going upstream on the upper DR from Alter Rd., or even remaining stationary with one of my 50lb thrust electrics (boat has 2 of 'em).

This fishing report has the best action I've heard so far. Definitely gotta hit it! :fish: But I'll still launch on the downstream side, so I won't be down a different sort of creek if I have to rely on the electrics...

The fishing must have really picked up over night. Fished Saturday morning with one coho landed. Saw approx. (4-5) other boats with no action in this exact same stretch of water. Water surface temp was anywhere from 36 to 37 degrees exept near warm water discharge where it crept up to low 40's. Just my observations.

Where's the closest public or reasonable pay per use launch site downstream of the power plant?

I saw a mention of Marine City above, but I'm not too familiar with the area, and would like to avoid too much web searching to have to find out.

Can't wait for a warm day with a S or W wind to hit this! :fish:

Marine City is the closest launch downstream.

I fished on sunday and that is a true report.

The guys drifting were using spawn and doing very well.

Lemey's? Been unaware of it. Feel free to PM or post more info. I'll also do an internet search or three.

Friday's looking like the best day to have a go.

Trolled it yesterday morning along with a friend in another boat and all we got was frost bite from the wind chill! Water temp was still 34 degress, to cold yet IMO.

I would be curious too how this rig is set up.

I would be curious too how this rig is set up.Quoting Todd Steele-6 inch leader with enough weight to get it to bottom.I would think a bottom bouncer would work.

It looked like a small parmid sinker = V. line tyed to the eye of the sinker and approx 24 to 36 inch lead to the spawn:D nothing fancy good luck guys

Thanks for the info B.B. I talked my buddy into fishing the SCR (he has the boat) weather permitting we'll give it a go on Sunday. I think their calling for high winds but hopefully that will change. Thinking of trying near the Edison Plant in St. Clair, are the docks in at the launch there? we will be jiggin and maybe drifting spawn since that seems to be the ticket for coho. This will be my first time on the SCR I can use a change of scenery and maybe get into a salmon or two it's been a while since I hooked one. Are most fisherman hugging the shoreline or are they out into the channel a bit ? Thanks in advance I do appreciate it - Scott
