went to my 1st Maumee walleye trip today. took over 30 minutes to get the Ohio fishing license at the tackle shop because that place's packed!

went over the Blue Grass Is. the water was a bit high but still able to make it over there along with about 100-150 ppl, while the other side of the water got equal or more fisherman toward the west.

the weather can be better, it actually snow for 20 minutes. fingers lost feeling after couple hours (fishing gloves making matter worse because the icded cold water). Sun finally came out after noon, by then, we decided to call it a day.

I snagged 4, lost 1 that's legal hooked, (yeah, the one that got away is always the big one....and it was.... :p), and between me & my buddy, we got 7. all between 16-21" jacks. so of course didn't limit out. from 8:30-2pm, and the 1st trip, I said we did good. As i said to my buddy, we shouldn't be bugged with that one fish, but be greatful for the 7 we landed. :smile-mad

Can't wait next weekend.... :cheeky-sm :cheeky-sm:cheeky-sm

Indeed one of the kind! it's packed with anglers head to head but in sync with each other. Cast the same direction; if once moves out of the line, the hole will fill by someone quickly.... it really gets into your nerve if you are not really for the crowd. But once you settle down, it’s all good...

And the fight those walleye put up make it even better. :D

Weekday will get a lighter crowd, that's for sure. fair warning, if you are not done, don't leave your spot, or it's free for grap. the fish start hitting at dawn ~8ish. someone said they max out in 20 minutes, and someone got 2 and call it quit for 1/2 a day. so it's all about location, luck, & patient. the Maumee Tackle store website got some very helpful informations. DO USE THE CAROLINA RIG setup. it'll save u lots of $$ for buying those snagged jigs & sinkers.

have fun out there!

I only saw them in 6 locations today,a lot of guy are surprised when the walk out of the river going to the parking lot and find a officer waiting for them ,,they work in pairs both have scopes to verify snaggers I guess,,people today were winning about being ticketed for starting to fish 5 minutes early,,and ticketed for throwing cigarette butts in the river,,

we saw the DNR truck toward the sidecut park before 7am, the guy pulled in at gas station for coffee and we were joking to just follow him to find the best spot. after we got the license from the tackle shop (that's 30 minutes wait there), and pull in the park, the OA truck was just leaving the park, so I am sure he didn't go there just to say hi to people.

and later saw one OA walking back to truck with a fisherman while OA has a fish on hand. (not sure what's the deal), that happen at the buttonwood side of the river.

then by the time we finished, head back to the parking lot, see another OA w/ truck parked next to the building after you crossed the water (which leaves you no room to run!!!:xzicon_sm)

One thing another fisherman remind us that don't try to carry all the fish by one person (we got 7 jacks on 2 stringers but decide to have one guy walk with the fish on both hand to balance out while walk pass the woods, while the other guy just have the net & the rods), OA will ticket you so fast before you can finish saying "F$% K!".

someone told me that even you legally hooked a fish, and it got some marks on the body that shows been snagged, you have to let it go. I would like to make an argument about that. those fish we carry over from one side of the island to another side, and head to the parking lot, and they got caught with branches, trees, drag on the sand/mud, it got marks all over the body, and bleeding on body. I'll be pissed if i got a ticket saying I snag the fish, and fight to the death for that ticket.

is there a certain time you can fish down there? it seems like a fricken circus down there

the Maumee Tackle shop has the sun raise/set chart, i think that's the best you can follow with. and it'll always be a circus down there, but some spot will be lighter than the others. (then those spots will get less fish, i bet.) the whole time we were there, we see spots got fill up as soon as others pulled out, it's not too crazy because it's like one sync with the one next to you the whole time, like the assembly line. it looked scary from the side, but once you are in the line up, all you care is the fish. If you are new to the area, and alone, just start a friend conversation with the guy next to you.

heard weekdays are better, less crowd. might proof it this week on this theory. :p

have fun out there!

Sunrise till sunset. Strictly enforced. They literally blow a horn at some of the places. Ain't it great to see enforcement taken seriously. When you have that many fishermen in one place, order must be maintained, or it would be a riot, and people would get hurt. I've seen some real stunts down there that deserved tickets. I keep the ODNR RAP line on speed dial on the cell phone. 1-800-762-2437 If you don't act like a fool down there, you will be left alone to enjoy your day. If you screw up.... They will point it out for you. Wish Michigan CO's would emulate them. OK, I'll stop. Capnhook

I was there Sunday 3/22 am. That is the first time I have been there in about 10-12 yrs. Everyone around me were getting there limits, but I must have been doing something wrong. I got 1 ond lost 4. Got there about 20mins before fishing time. There was alot of people there, but around 8:30 the flood gates opened and it was elbow to elbow getting snaged with everyone line with evey cast. I left at 9:30. Now I see why I quit going down there. But I will be back on Wed morning after work. seince I work down there I just can not resist going.

this info might be too late for you now, but the 1/2 oz works best for us; and per regulars down there, it ranged from 3/8oz to 3/4 oz depending on the water level & current. if you don't feel it hits the bottom, you need get more weight in.

have fun & let us know how u do, planning to go back down there after work at Tuesday (wife already signed the permission slip :D).

Buttomwood is directly on the other side of the Bluegrass Island, and see many hook ups on Saturday. (it's hotter at the island side, i got to said, but you don't need to walk across the water and through the woods, less crowd).

I got a chance to go Sunday, limited in about 2.5 hours. Orange head jig and sparkle green tail lit em up. Kept 4, lost 4, snagged 2. There was more people down there yesterday than I have ever seen, must have been 4000 people lining the river. I drove, with a buddy, we met at a mutally convenient place, drove 50 miles, and I realized I forgot my waders in my truck.:lol: Drove back and got them, ended up hitting the river around 10.

Did anyone else see that mustang that hit the center pillar for the overpass of Rauch Rd. No signs of braking whatsoever, it went right into the median, busted through the gaurd rail and nailed the concrete pillar. We passed by before the emergency vehicles got there, car still smoking. There was already a dozen or so people helping so we kept going, but I wondered the fate of the driver.

Bull, the Ohio DNR guys are A H's, that coming from a Ohio guy of course. They will ticket you for just about anything on the Maumee.
But I went out last evening with my little boat, landed 9 all were snagged and went back in, I don't even take a stringer with me, just c&r will keep you out of trouble. I also picked up about 200 floating jigs on my way up stream. Like animals go somewhere to die so do floaters. But those DNR guys are all over the place, I had the 200 dollar class once and not again.
I see guys with pictures of the fish I know how that happens, first the chin, then the cheek, then under the fin, then lets get a quick limit and get out of here, Class time. Been there done it. Good luck to each of you but it is like a drug, you are screwed.

I fished elbow to elbow down there with about 20 guys yesterday, and of the 60+ fish I saw dragged in and kept, none were snagged. When you are in line with that many people, it will keep honest people honest. The buddy I went down there with snagged 5, lost 5, and kept 1. I did not witness one guy keep a snagged fish. I have spent many hours down there fishing and I have never seen anyone keep a snagged fish. I've chatted with the CO's down there as well, seem like regular guys to me.

A couple years ago, I was fishing the island and a guy kept a snagged fish a couple people down. The guy next to me was instantly pissed and called the hotline. An hour later, the same guy that called snagged an 8 lber and kept it, pretending that he caught it in the mouth. I moved.

Yeah, saw that same crap up at Betise R. last year while doing salmon fishing. a father with the son is keep saying about snagging, and when he finally snagged one by the tail, he grab the fish and run toward his truck with his boy, while my buddy keep calling him out from behind, he just pretend not hearing it. What a joker....

Preaching it and living it is two entirely different things.... :o

my 1st 2 jacks were snagged and so tempting to keep them, but figure not worth the risk, especially the 1st one was saw by the guy next to us and I don't feel keep it just to limit out. but then again, those weren't 8 lber, i might do the same when it happens to me... so let's just pray to the fish god that i only snag with 2-3 lb, and the 8 lb will be inside out on the mouth.....

just keep in mind that someone is watching, CO or the guy next to you, do what's right, according to the regulation. you'll have a good time.

Last year I was fishing next to some knucklehead who snagged a nice jack in the tail. While he was fighting the fish, he began screaming, "It's in the mouth, YES, it's in the mouth!" I guess he thought by screaming "it's in the mouth" that all people including CO's would look the other way. Obviously not the case and obviously not a good idea. He ran to his truck though and I think he escaped. I also made sure to let him know how retarded he is.

CO are just like fishermen, they are good guys, there are A-holes. just fact of life. I am sure majority of them are doing the right thing, but it's easy to point out one bad seed because that's how things are, just like everything in life.

if I ever said something that shouldn't, i apologized, didn't mean to offend anyone. and I certainly wouldn't want people to call me a-hole (although i am pretty much sure i am close or achieve that level many times).

Nah, I actually meant the A-holes that fish next to you left & right. some of those people should really need to learn how to fish with others; and some should just keep their chills, not claim the spots as their own living room; floating cigarette butts are such a turn-off while you are in water. and please bring a bag with you to collect your junks. these are the things i see down there. And I haven't make contact with any CO to make my comments.

the river is not that bad. There are times when the people fishing next to you don't know what they are doing, but a few tips can be helpful, but sometimes they take tips the wrong way. In the past four years, I have had 1 bad experience, (not with the CO's) so just moved to a different spot. As long as you don't keep snagged fish or be sneaky taking the hook out, there is nothing to worry about. Fishing during the week is always the best option, but I was there Sunday with the other thousands, and only snagged someones line 1X in 3 hours, so it was not too bad.
The river is not as bad as it sounds, it definately is not for everyone, but you should give it a shot. Myself or another member could show you a few spots.

Fished the river three years ago with stinky, I had a guy from shore watch me land a fish then he stepped into the exact spot I had been standing. I stringered the fish and stepped in stood about a foot from him and caught another keeper on my first cast. The look on his face was priceless. But for the most part the majority of your neighbors are friendly and courteous.

the water level was way down at Bluegrass Isl, windy and still chilling standing in water, can't believe it said 50s.

Two friends of mine hit bluegrass yesterday, they caught 6 fish. Lot of people walking out with 2 or 3......not bad.
As far as females.....a couple of my friends let them go, although they are waiting for a 32 incher for the wall. Myself.....I keep em'. I heard that at night the ONR shocks the fish and milks the fish and uses the stuff to trade with other states for quail, deer etc. I really don't know what impact it has, as it is legal. I fished Bluegrass this morning from sun up to around 1PM and managed 3 fairly hooked keepers and at least a dozen snagged throw backs. All the keepers were caught on floaters with orange/yellow Yum twister tails and a 3ft flourocarbon leader. Where I was fishing it was probably a 1-2 fish per person average with many empty stringers and a few with limits.

went down yesterday and got my limit in about 4 1/2 hours. fished bluegrass with about 10,000 other people. got there at 9:30 and waited until about 10:00 to get a spot where I wanted to fish. I was down there last sunday and there wasn't half the people as yesterday. not many fish being caught and the river is full of junk. I pulled in more jigheads than what I lost. I used bright jigheads with dark tails, purple seemed to work the best.

went out there Sat morning, get in late, passed 9am. the parking lot at Bluegrass Isl. is full, have to park on the side of the street.

fishing's light. REAL light. see few got limits, most with 1 and 2. and some MAJOR snagging going on................. we got skunk (since sucker doesn't count....) see more than 10 suckers landed around us, more than walleye.

i got more jigheads than I lost today. pulled in over 30 yards of line with 2 BIG splitshots on the line. I don't know what that dude was thinking, must cut the line at the reel.

went around check the area, by 3pm, still got water full with people, most are at Bluegrass Isl, or Bottomwood. took a couple photos of the crowd, will upload later.

really really windy. water level's WAY down. go over to the island wouldn't get my knee height wet.

I wouldn't try Maumee again until the water back up 3-4 more ft. it's just not worth the 1.5 hour drive....

went out there Sat morning, get in late, passed 9am. the parking lot at Bluegrass Isl. is full, have to park on the side of the street.

fishing's light. REAL light. see few got limits, most with 1 and 2. and some MAJOR snagging going on................. we got skunk (since sucker doesn't count....) see more than 10 suckers landed around us, more than walleye.

i got more jigheads than I lost today. pulled in over 30 yards of line with 2 BIG splitshots on the line.

I wouldn't try Maumee again until the water back up 3-4 more ft. it's just not worth the 1.5 hour drive....

hope someone will do better than us, have fun guys/gals!

The sucker bite was on this morning. My guess about the 30 feet of line with split shot would be that a guy got snagged, he was using crap line, and the line snapped by the reel instead of at the leader. I only say this because one of my buddies did this about 6 times today. I also was able to land some very nice floating jigs which was about the most excitement I felt all day. When does c & r bass season start?

Wife and a friend were at bluegrass yesterday, I landed one there and moved over to the fallen timbers area and landed another. Wife and buddy came up empty handed. It has definately slowed from last weekend.

took this picture while standing in water at Bluegrass Isl, looking toward East (Jerome Rd direction), while the otherside to Ft. Meigs direction has about the same (slightly less) crowd. around 10am, 1st round of people start moving out of the water, heading home with 1 or 2 jacks.

I bet many of them (me & my buddies included) will stay home for a few days and waiting for another batch of fish come in before head out there again....

have fun, guys/gals!

wanderboy, thanks for posting the pics, that is exactly the image I will always remember when thinking about the Maumee. It can be a complete zoo at times but that is sort of the mystic of fishing the the big M. I can't make that trip this year but am hoping to do it in 2010.

Caught 20 incher sat morning on the 5th cast. Fishing was pretty good with the guys around me, that 1st 20 minutes of fishing was HOT, plenty of fish were caught and as fast as it started it was over. It really was a great day though, I only lost 10 rigs and made many new friends, Wang if you're reading this, good effort out there bud, you definitely gave it your all.

Hit up the Maumee at Bluegrass Island again today from 1:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon. Took about 2 hours to get a limit of four jacks, but did not get another fish after that. Only snagged one today and that was a sucker. Unfortunately for everyone else I must have had the only hot spot as I saw very few fish caught around me. :D

Just got off the phone with Wang. We're going to head out there together this Saturday if you wan't to join us. He said he's still smiling and that he hasn't had that much fun in all his years of fishing.

RJ, I see your buddy there on Maumeetackle.com. You know, the guy that moved in and caught all of your fish in like 30 minutes.

Here's the 10 lber caught last Saturday next to Wang.
