Where are you fishing for them?

All depends upon water temp and time of year.

I use big spinnerbaits and black fury mepps. But I fish mostly shallow lakes.

how about spring time, pre weed and casting?

I bought a bunch of swimbaits over the winter, hopefully they work out

Spinner baits or if you have live bait put minnows under a bobber

If you are fishing deeper lakes I have had a lot of success trolling along weedy steep drop offs with divers like hot n tots, wiggle warts, rebels, and DT 10s. Troll fast, like 2.5-3 mph and you'll trigger lots of aggressive strikes. Try and stick to 15 ft as best you can, if you don't snag weeds from time to time you aren't doing it right. At least 10 times this summer I caught 8 or more pike with a partner trolling 2 combined lines this way in a matter of 2 hrs. Also I think its best in the middle of the afternoon, dawn and dusk don't seem too productive a time for pike. Try lures you like, crazy fire tiger colors, mettalic reds, and crawfish colors seem to work best for me, but you should experiment and try a little advice from everyone to figure out what works for you. Fishing is like life, the more I learn about it, the more i realize that I don't know about it. So stay teachable and always try new stuff when a technique doesn't seem to work. Always start aggressive, and drop down to finesse if that isn't working because aggressive is going to usually land more fish. I hope that helps. Also wait for season to open =) They'll have soft mouths for a little while. -Josh

I can't catch a bass on a chatter bait, but sure can catch some pike on them.;) A hot-n-tot in the fire-tiger color is my go to bait.

Is there any way I can know if I'm trolling at the right speed from a kayak (when fishing for pike)? And would 3-5 inch perch (assuming this is legal) make good pike bait?

Generally, during the open water season, rattle traps and jointed rapalas work well trolled. Can also cast and retrieve the rattle traps since they cast like a rocket... Not a huge spinnerbait guy but they do work well also.

I've always preferred casting to trolling for pike...unless I'm in Canada!;)

I only troll to find fish...or to be fishing while I'm locating likely spots.

I'm a huge spinnerbait guy.

Anything with current I like in line spinnerbaits. I usually go BIG. Like 6-8" with a big bucktail. Keeps the other species and little fish off the line and while I may not catch as many the ones I get are bigger.

Slow/light current or shallow lakes I like a big stickbait worked and jerked and sometimes screamin' fast. I'll even use old lures that have the lip busted off.

Rattle Traps, in-line spinners, 4 blade spinners baits, baitfish type cranks, Ive caught a few on the perch berkley frenzy baits. Sluggos. Ive also caught pike while jigging for crappie using a small jig. Anything will attract them you just need to know where they are, drop offs with weeds in the 8-15 fow is where I go. Sounds like you are new to pike, you should experiment on the same lake. Once you know where the fish are then you can use different baits and find the ones that work so when you go to a new lake you are prepared and just need to locate the fish.

My biggest two northerns last year came on a 3" tube in 3' of water on opening day and a 10" worm in 24' of water in mid summer. I believe it depends more on the time of year and current prey than any one given type of bait. Biggest northern ever came on a 1/0 Mepps with natural squirrel tail, right after ice out, in a creek mouth in northern Minnesota. In my opinion, your best chance to connect with really big pike shallow is early spring and late fall and if I had to choose one lure, it would be a gold 3/4 oz Johnson silver minnow rigged with a black 6-7" straight tailed worm.

I fish LSC, open year round. early spring a very wid spoon with a lot of lift and flash at slow speed is just the ticket. That would be a 1oz Redeye wiggler, with or without a grub tail. a Hushy Jerk can get them going too,
As things progress and the fish are post spawn, but still in water 6' or less, it is hard to beat a buzzbait for heart stopping hits and a great search bait. Big spinnerbaits come into their own too, as temps are up and some weeds are too.

I don't normally target pike, but when I am throwing one of these KaRu VibraSpins it is hard to keep them off.

It makes a lot of noise and flash and seems to attract them in the summer.

I do good with crawker harness's...troll for walleye and get pike....I use the Yellow with red dots Mylar spin floats 1/2" to 5/8" and put a stinger treble in it. I have caught alot of pike with this set up.

Spinner baits, spoons (5 of diamonds or red and white), slug-gos (black, leach imitations) sucker under a slip bobber, husky jerks, large mepps bucktails and rabbit strip pike bunny.

Anyone know where you can get a jumbo sized bass jig in chartreuse? They use them on in-fisherman for pike, but I can't find them anywhere.

Thorne Bros also has a few different kinds of large jig, plain or with plastic attached.

I think the best lure for big pike is a big, dead, salted sucker minnow floated under a bobber. The salt imitates blood, and big pike are lazy: they're more likely to strike a dead fish because it requires the smallest energy expenditure. This is what the pros in Europe use, and I've used it with great success.

Angry-colored spinner baits also work well.

or just go to cabelas as they have a great musky and pike selection and those 4-6 inch shakers are on clearance ! i got 5 packages of them and a 1 oz jig like a j-mac and 4 packs of kalin swimjigheads half-three quarter-1 oz and 1.5 oz - good for big wallys too

After ice out or in the Spring try and locate running water, like a river mouth. Pike are a cool water fish. But in the Spring after ice out the bait fish will move into these "warmer waters" and the pike will follow. I fish with a dead sucker minnow under a bobber. These fish are oportunistic eaters and will gorge themselves on fish that didnt make it through the winter. In the warmer months when the water warms these big predators will move into the cooler deeper waters. I will troll rattle traps along breaks and weed lines with good sucess. I have also had good success casting bigger mepps as well.

I always liked using a weedless Johnson silver minnow spoon tipped w/ pork frog especially in shallow weedy areas. Buzzbaits are also a good choice and larger spinnerbaits and don't forget mepps bucktail spinners size 5 or larger. I haven't targeted pike like I use to in years I may have to give em a try this year.

I like to tie a nice big treble on to a baby duck http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/images/icons/icon19.gif in early summer and let him swim. Tricky part is keeping momma away while I am trying to catch them..J.K. I know the bigger pike take a toll on the little critters when they are real young.
