I'm currently looking at boats for sale, but im lookin for boats under $2,000. I've noticed alot of tri-hull boats for really good prices on craigslist. I wanted to know if these boats would be good for pike musky and bass fishng? I will be going on Lake st. clair most of the time, and just wanted some info cuzz this will be the first boat i've ever had.

I think you might be better off and happier with a V hull boat than a tri hull. I believe a deep V hull boat will handle the lake and river wakes and currents better then the tri hulls.
All the years I've fished the river I think I have only seen a couple tri hulls out there..........Bob B.

Avoid the tri-hull, find yourself a nice deep-V, you should be able to find something decent for $2k-$2500

Go with a deep V you'll be happier. You should be able to get a decent rig in the $2K range.

Go V hull, my brother had a tri hull many years ago and unless the lake is FLAT, you rock and roll a ton. The 17 Smoker Craft someone just posted today looks like a nice ride for the price

I had a tri-hull and it was ok for awhile...........until it sank with me in it. Rough water came over the bow and it now sits somewhere on the bottom of Lake Huron. If you can, have owner take you for a trial spin, the motor is as, or more, important than the boat.

Absolutely! Chances are the motor is worth half the price too. Ive seen more then one boat run fine on the trailer but fail under load. Plus you dont want to get stuck out there!

Greelhappy! Im glad youre still with us! that lake can be scary! Howd you get back to shore?:yikes:

Talk to any dentist and he will tell you to buy a tr-hull. The first time I rode in a tri-hull I lost 2 fillings out of my teeth. Deep V all the way. Besure to look closely at the motor for signs of witness marks on the bolts and screws under the motor cover. Ask the owner first what if any problems he had and then look under the cover. Good Luck you should have no problem finding a boat these days.

With regards to the motor. When u find the boat u want, get the motor make/model/etc and then look up the compression ratios for the cylinders. Then have them checked by a mechanic to make sure that the compression ratios are near the manufactor's specs. If they aren't, don't buy unless u are willing to have a sluggish boat or put additional money into it. Deep V is the way to go...

IMO..... id be looking for @ least an 18' glass boat. I had a 26' Baha...great boat, but not made for fishing ( at least the ones that live IN the lake!)

Went to a 16' crestliner....which worked fine except that it was a rough ride most of the time out there.... which is to be expected... its aluminum.

Went to an 18' Bayliner Trophy (center console) and that fits the bill for what I want to do.... Small enough to trailer to erie or saginaw bay....can launch and retrieve by myself if need be... sneak back into the canals and cuts when the panfish are hot.

Its just big enough to handle the rough stuff when it pops up.... Its self bailing too which makes it nice when u take a wave over the bow.... Just throttle up and out the back it goes!!

Only 2 things I dont like are the lack of storage space and I miss the full windshield to hide behind on those cold *** mornings.

Good luck in ur quest!! Let us know what u find....there will be a ton hitting the classifieds n the next month.
