thinking about putting in a better filtration system on the furnace. right now I only have the 1" filters and the wife has noticed a lot more dust lately. Thinking maybe we need to upgrade to the 4" type filter. Anyone out there interested in talking to me about this. I am north of Lansing about 30 minutes. PM me if interested.

Thanks

It's nice to try to put someone to work and I'm sure that they will appreciate it if you do go that route. But if you find it's too expensive, you can buy better quality 1" filters that work great. They're called "Filtrete" and the do a pretty good job. I've used them before and though they do cost more than the cheap blue ones you get they work very well.

Good luck either way!

Do not use filtrete nothing will kill your furnace faster the filters are to dense and clog quickly there for your furnace will not get enough air and over heat you may try putting this in the homesteading forum there are other mechanical contractors on this site like my self that where we hang out you are correct in wanting a 4" filter best bang for your buck Im sure the other contractors will agree on my opinion and statements here

:yeahthat:

I actually use a filtrete, but I use the red border filter vs. the purple one. The purple one I strongly advise against, like mentioned it has too much resistance and I've seen coils freeze from the lack of air flow from it. The red ones still filter alot without the resistance, but I change mine monthly (like it should). Probably by the end of summer I'll install an aire bear.

I can see your point but this is the first I've ever heard of there being a problem with Filtrete filters. I too used the red ones for years without a problem. In my house now I have an electronic air cleaner but I pulled the elements out and replaced them with one of those 4" thick pleated filters and it too works fine. In fact, it's about due to be changed. Gotta add that to the to do list. ;)

On all of our installations we put Aire Bears great filter but to your point about the purple ones on the older furnaces with low cfm they would freeze coils but with newer furnaces and correct return they work fine with very low pressure drop.

I'm going to do some research on Aire Bear filters

I got an Aprial Aire pleated in my house and it works very good. I only change it once a year. The 1 inch need to be changed at least once a month. The company I work for when replacing a furnace we put in the 4 inch pleated. Hope this will help you.

Have to agree with he majority here in saying the 4" filters are better. The Honeywell Media Filtration systems(very similar to the April Aire and Air Bear systems) are what I use and recommend. If you truly want a GREAT system, check into the HEPA systems. If you have asthma or allergies there is no better system in my professional opinion.

i deal with heating and cooling too. My practice is just change the cheaper ones more often. Have you ever cleaned your ducts??? Nasty stuff and tons of dust can gather, especially if you have pets. I've seen lint and dust over an inch deep before. It is a great move to help your health.
